Of A Shining Future
by Nightlady
(c) 1998

Nick stood at the gate, waiting for the last flight in from Moose Jaw. He
checked his watch for the twentieth time in as many minutes and sighed as
he realized that the flight wasn't due for ten more minutes.

Nat had gone to Moose Jaw to help out when the local ME had fallen and
broken his arm. That had been over 3 weeks ago and Nick was more than
anxious for her to return. Not only has these been the longest three weeks
in his existence, but Nick admitted to being worried that some attractive
mortal man, who could give Nat all the things she deserved might have
caught her eye.

Nick sighed, things had not been going smoothly in his and Nat's
relationship and she had taken the assignment in Moose Jaw to "Give myself
a chance to really think things through without distractions."  Nick
wondered what decisions she may have reached.

He'd spent these past weeks thinking too, and he knew that no matter what
he would have to do, if Nat loved him he would not let her go.

Finally the plane landed and pulled up to the gate. Nick looked around the
waiting area, there were only 4 others in the vicinity. When the doors
opened his keen hearing easily isolated one familiar heartbeat.  He noticed
that it was slightly elevated. He hoped that was a good sign.

It was only a few moments until Nat emerged into the waiting area. As he
caught sight of her glorious tumble of chestnut colored curls and the
unique scent that was Natalie reached him, Nick was so glad to see her that
he grasped her in a tight embrace.

Nat was a bit surprised by Nick's actions, he normally was not very
demonstrative especially in public, but she readily returned his hug. She'd
had three long weeks to think about their relationship and what she wanted
from her life.

When she'd left for Moose Jaw, she hadn't even been sure that she would
return to Toronto. The ambiguity of her relationship with Nick was starting
to wear her down. Even though she knew that she loved Nick, she wasn't
certain of just what his feelings for her were. At times she felt as if he
did love her, but right after such an occasion Nick would seem to do
something to put some distance between them.  Nat was realistic enough to
know that the chances of her finding a cure for Nick, particularly before
she grew too old to spend her life with him were infinitesimally small.
Even though she dreamed of a life with Nick and a family of their own, that
was unlikely to happen.

It was only when Nat realized just what scenario she was considering that
she understood that her decision had actually been made long before she
left Toronto. Now all she had to do was try to get up the nerve to tell
Nick.

As she found herself in Nick's embrace, Nat smiled. She was positive now
that her decision was the right one. She raised her face to his and, before
she lost her nerve, kissed him.

Nick stood holding Nat, just enjoying the scent of her hair. Her presence
and the way she felt in his arms gave him strength. When she smiled up at
him and kissed him he responded to her action hungrily. He tangled his
fingers in her hair and deepened the kiss, his tongue seeking entrance to
her mouth.

Nat felt her heart start to race as Nick's tongue probed against her lips.
She opened her mouth and met it with her own seeking tongue. As the kiss
grew in passion, Nat felt her knees suddenly weakening and she pressed her
body against Nick's clinging to him for support.

It was several minutes later when they finally broke their embrace. Nat
stood for a minute with her head against Nick's chest, breathing rapidly.
When she finally looked around, she realized that the terminal seemed very,
very quiet.

"Um, Nick? I think we'd better go get my luggage." She said. "It looks like
they're about to close this place up for the night."

Nick raised his head from nuzzling Nat's hair and looked around. There was
not another person in sight. He put his arm around Nat and they headed for
the baggage claim area. As they went down toward the claim area, Nick
listened carefully. He could only hear one or two other heartbeats in the
whole building.

Nat's luggage was sitting on the silent baggage carousel. Just as Nick
reached to get it, the lights began to go off throughout the concourse.

"Nick?" Nat started to say, when they were suddenly plunged into darkness.
She didn't dare move, as she couldn't see her hand in front of her face.

Nick sat the luggage down and took Nat in his arms. "Don't worry, I can
see."
Nat willingly snuggled against Nick. Together they made their way to the
doors, which they found, locked.

Nat giggled, "I think we're locked in!"

Nick smiled, he could think of worse fates than being stranded with Nat for
the rest of the night.

"We are, and I can't hear anyone else around."

They moved away from the doors and headed back upstairs. There were some
small safety-lights on that level, enabling Nat to see where she was going.

"Great. Just how I wanted to spend my first night back in Toronto. Sitting
in a uncomfortable airport lounge chair." Nat said. Her plans had included
being alone with Nick, but in far more comfortable settings.

Nick smiled, "I know where we can go. And I promise the seating
arrangements will be very comfortable."

He led her down a hallway to an unmarked door. Giving the knob a twist he
forced the lock and opened it. Inside was a room decorated with plush
carpet, and large sofas.

"It's a private waiting area for VIP's." Nick said, as he ushered Nat
inside.

Nat looked around. The room was lovely. "You're right about the seating
arrangements!" She said as she sank onto the buttery soft leather of one of
the sofas. The sofa was wide and long, almost a large as a single bed. Nat
thought for a moment then patted the space next to her. "Come and sit down,
Nick. I want to talk with you."

Nick sat next to her. He looked at her face and was relieved to see that
she seemed happy.

"About what?" He asked. He looked into her wide blue eyes.

"About us." Nat replied softly. "About the future and what I want from it."
She saw the look of concern that crossed Nick's face. "I did a lot of
thinking in Moose Jaw, actually that's about all there is to do there." Nat
started. "I've come to a decision and I hope that I can make you understand
it. I know now what I want in my life."

She took Nick's hand in hers. "I was all alone in Moose Jaw, and I didn't
like it. I don't want to wake up one day and find that you've left and I am
alone here."

Nick could feel his heart give a double beat. "I don't ever want to leave
you, Nat." He began.

Nat laid her fingers on his lips. "Let me finish. I want to be with you,
Nick. I want to wake up in your arms. I want to have a home with our
children playing in the back yard. Most of all, I want us to be together."
She smiled and continued. "I would prefer for us to be together as mortals,
but I don't have a cure for you. I can't say that I'll find one, in a
mortal life time." She looked into his eyes, her own pleading with him to
understand.

Nick sat very still. He knew what Nat was trying to ask of him. He'd
reached the same conclusion himself and, despite his loathing of the
vampire, he loved her too much to ever leave her. He was prepared to bring
her across, but he had to be certain that she truly wanted it and
understood what it meant.

"But if you were like me, if I brought you across, you'd have all the time
in the world. Are you prepared to never see another sunrise, Nat? We don't
really know if there IS a cure." Nick said, carefully listening to her
heart and watching her face.

Nat nodded. "I know, but I'm willing to bet that there is, or will be
someday. And until we find it, at least we can be together." That he hadn't
rejected the idea out of hand encouraged her. "I'm in love with you Nick,
and I cannot imagine a future without you." She looked at him and waited
for his reaction. When he pulled her against him and she heard his softly
whispered, "No more than I love you." Nat felt tears of joy spring to her
eyes. She pulled back and looked into his face. "Then you'll do it? You'll
bring me across?"

Nick nodded. "I cannot bear the thought of existence without you."  He
pulled her into his arms and began to kiss her. His hands slowly caressed
her body, tracing every curve and hollow. He undid the buttons on her
blouse and slid it from her shoulders. His lips found the soft hollow of
her throat and traced a trail of cold fire down to the swell of her breasts.

Nat moaned as she felt her nerves come alive at Nick's touch. She'd longed
for this moment, never quite daring to allow herself to believe that it
would happen
As Nick undid her bra, freeing her breasts, she undid his shirt. Her hands
ran lovingly over the smooth, firm muscles of his back and chest.  The
softness of the leather against her skin was delightful. Once Nick pushed
her back, prone on the couch, she felt him pull her skirt down along with
the lacy panties and hose she wore beneath it.  He tenderly removed her
shoes and the rest of her clothing, then paused to divest himself of his
own.

Nat's eyes widened and she smiled in eager anticipation as she looked at
his now naked body.  His manhood stood out, thick and hard, and she felt
her body ache with the need to feel him inside her. As he covered her body
with his, the coolness of his skin set shivers of delight throughout her.
When he took her breast in his mouth, his tongue tracing circles around the
sensitive nipple she gasped and ground her hips against his throbbing cock.
She gave a moan that was a plea for fulfillment as she called his name.

Nick delighted in the warmth of Nat's body beneath him. He could hear and
smell her blood as it raced just beneath the surface and he could feel his
own body respond to it. He wanted to taste her, to possess all that she
was, to make her forever his.

His eyes glowed a brilliant gold, and he felt his fangs drop. The ache in
his groin goading him on as his body cried out for satisfaction. He needed
to feel her damp moistness surrounding him as much as he needed the sweet
elixir of her blood.  As the spicy-orange scent that was uniquely Natalie
mingled with the musk scent of her arousal, he eased her legs apart.
Slowly, carefully he sought and found the warm, dampness of her opening and
trembling with pent up desire, he slid the head of his cock into it.
Exhilarating in the heat that surrounded him, he very slowly entered her
completely.

Nat cried out as she felt Nick's hardness fill her. Her body was trembling
as she felt the gradual building of her orgasm begin. When Nick began to
move inside her she wrapped her legs about his hips.  She nearly fainted
when his cool thumb began to lightly stroke her nub as he gradually
increased his thrusts. Her hands grabbed onto his shoulders, as she pulled
him even closer to her.  At last, when she was panting with the need for
release, he thrust twice deeply into her and her body shook with the force
of her climax.

Nick looked into her passion filled face. He needed her blood for his own
release and he knew that once he tasted it, he would either have to kill
her or bring her across. The former was not an option so far as Nick was
concerned, but he wanted her reassurance that the second was truly what she
desired.

"Nat, are you sure?" He rasped out hoarsely.

She opened her eyes and smiled. "Yes, Nick. I am." She kissed him, feeling
the outline of his fangs. Unafraid, she turned her head and exposed the
slender column of her neck to him. She heard his murmured, "Don't be
afraid, my love" and, at almost the same moment, she felt a sharp pricking
as Nick sank his fangs into her throat.

His love for her filled her senses, and she felt his own release as it
echoed through her mind. She tried to let him know how much she loved him,
and hoped that he would feel it. She was surprise that there wasn't any
pain, just a languid sense of peace as she sank into a deep darkness.

Nick drank deeply of Nat's blood. His climax exploded through every nerve
and he moaned with the pleasure of it.  He had dreamed of making love to
her and sharing the total intimacy of this experience with her for years.
Now, it was being fulfilled and his head reeled as the images he received
from her washed over him. The love she had for him warming him and her
unshakable faith in him melting the coldness of his vampire's heart. He
could sense that she was not afraid of being what he was, but only of not
being with him. He drank until he heard her heart slow and struggle to
maintain her mortal life. Only then did he slip his fangs from her neck.
When he raised his mouth from her throat, he looked at her and the look of
pure joy on her face enabled him to continue.
Biting his own wrist, he held it to her mouth. He could feel his own
nervousness as he waited for her to swallow. He knew from his own
experience of being brought across, that Nat alone could make the decision
to return to him. He worried that in his enjoyment of her blood he'd taken
too much and would lose her. He worried that she would cross through the
doorway and not return to him. His heart sang with relief as, at last, she
took the first swallow of his blood and Nick relaxed. He'd stopped in time,
she has chosen to return, and now Nat would be his, forever.

Nat slowly came to consciousness, the sweet taste of Nick's blood filling
her mouth and soul. As she opened her now gold flecked eyes, she looked up
into his face. Raising her hand she caressed his cheek and smiled.

"I saw the doorway, Nick." She told him. "And I knew that my place is not
on the other side, but here with you."

Nick held her tightly. "I never wanted this to happen to you, Nat."

Nat kissed him. "I know that, but it wasn't your choice Nick, it was mine."
She shuddered as a wave of hunger struck her.

Nick helped her dress and carried her up through the skylight. He headed
for the loft. He knew that he had a few bottles of LaCroix's finest vintage
there. That would satiate the first of Nat's hunger and it was still early
enough that he could obtain more.  As he took his love home Nick knew, for
the first time in many centuries, peace.

Nat snuggled in Nick's arms as they flew toward the loft. A part of her
sensed that she, too, now had this ability, but she was more comfortable
being held by her lover.

Nick made sure that he stayed high above the Toronto streets. Not only did
he wish to avoid being seen by anyone but also, more importantly, he didn't
want Nat to catch the blood scent of anyone.  He knew that the pangs of
first hunger were beginning and he would never be able to forgive himself
if he inadvertently allowed her to kill. Once he got her to the loft he
could control the situation. It was with a sigh of relief that he descended
to the skylight and into the loft.

Depositing Nat on the couch, Nick went to a storage rack and removed a dark
green glass bottle with an ornate label.  He grabbed a large glass, opened
the bottle and poured the deep maroon contents into the glass. Carrying
both the glass and the bottle over to Nat, he handed the glass to her. He
sat the bottle on the table behind the couch.

Nat sat on the couch, rocking slightly as another wave of hunger swept over
her. Her eyes glowed gold as she scented a sharp, alluring odor. She looked
up as Nick approached and it took all her control to not snatch the glass
from his hand. Raising it to her lips, she let the thick liquid in it slide
down her throat. 'I'm drinking blood,' she thought. 'I'm a vampire now.'
She was amazed that she could actually tell that this blood came from a
young woman, who liked to swim and play volleyball.

While she drank, Nick phoned The Raven and arranged to have several cases
of their best stock brought to the loft before dawn. Hanging up the phone,
he went back to where Nat sat on the couch.

Draining the glass she looked at Nick. "I never knew. It's like I know the
person that donated this." She said quietly. To Nat's relief, that the
young woman was under the impression that she was merely donating a pint of
blood was also clear to her.

Nick nodded. "The fresher the blood, the greater the details we get from
it." He sat beside her and refilled the glass. Waiting till she finished
both that glass and another one, he got up and brought another bottle over
to where she sat. He opened it and poured yet another glass for Nat.

Nat lowered her eyes, slightly embarrassed. "Then you know how much I love
you." She said quietly.

Nick raised her chin. "Yes." He stroked her hair. "Believe me when I tell
you that my love for you is equally as strong." Just sitting next to her he
could feel his desire for her beginning to grow. Knowing that he was no
longer a danger to her and that this time the depth of their intimacy would
be even greater, made him want to take her upstairs and spend the rest of
the night making love to her. He fought to control his desires as knew that
she needed to feed right now, and so did he.

Nick went into the kitchen and opened a bottle of his usual cow's blood. He
grimaced. The scent of the human blood hung in the air and the taste of
Natalie's blood still lingered on his tongue. This would taste even more
bitter and disgusting than normal. His hunger, from feeding Nat, overtook
him and forgoing a glass he drained the bottle. Feeling better, he opened
another and this time reached for a glass.

Nat sipped from her glass of blood, watching Nick as he finished the first
bottle he'd taken from the fridge and then fixed a glass from a second
bottle for himself. Now that she knew how much more blood was than mere
sustenance, she regretted all the times she had berated him for still
drinking it.  She saw the look on his face as he raised his glass to his
lips. "Nick? Why did you give me human blood and not cow?" Nat asked.

Nick returned to her side. "You need human blood for now, Nat. Only human
will enable you to develop you abilities to the fullest." He saw the
puzzled look on her face. " Because as mortals we were human, it is human
blood that is the natural food for us. One of our kind that starts his or
her existence on something other than human blood is never as strong as
they should be. We call them carouches and they are looked down upon by
most of the community." He noticed Nat pointedly look at the glass in his
hand. "I crave human blood. I can manage on cow blood, or the blood of any
mammal, because of my age. It's like being on a poorly balanced diet; it
keeps you alive, but it doesn't really make you stronger."

Nat felt tears well up in her eyes as she realized for the first time just
how much Nick had sacrificed to avoid human blood and how vital blood was
to the vampire. "Oh Nick! And here I was always after you to cut back even
more! I'm so sorry."

Nick pulled her against him. "Shhh. You have helped me more than anyone
else in almost 800 years. You showed me that even though I'm still a
vampire, I haven't lost my humanity. You showed me that I can still love,
and that I am still worthy of being loved." He kissed her hair, delighting
in the silky feel of it, while softly rubbing her back.

Nat looked at him. "Nick, now that I'm like you, does it change what you
feel for me?"  She needed to know if it was her mortality that he'd loved
or if he loved her for herself.

Nick's expression softened. "The only thing that has changed is that I can
now allow myself to show you just how much I love you. I fell in love with
your soul, not because you were mortal." He kissed her softly on the
forehead.

Nat felt the cold lump of dread that had been in her chest melt at Nick's
words.
She smiled, and reaching to draw his mouth down to her own, said, "Show me."

Nick kissed her, his passion growing. Pulling back slightly he could see
the flecks of gold in her eyes. "Nat, you need to feed until you're no
longer hungry and then you should rest." He said, even as his hands
caressed her body.

"I'll rest better if you make love to me." Nat said, nipping lightly at his
lips. She couldn't believe how much more sensitive her nerves were. Every
touch of Nick's hands brought shivers of pleasure to her. She was aware of
a strange, almost aching feeling in her mouth. Carefully running her tongue
against them she realized that her fangs were enlarging.

Nick watched as Nat absorbed the changes that had occurred in her body.
With a wicked grin, he claimed her mouth. His tongue carefully teased and
toyed with her fangs and his passion became unbearable when her fangs
descended and she gasped with erotic pleasure. His own fangs dropped and he
scooped her up in his arms and carried her to the bedroom.

In the bedroom, he sat Nat on her feet. She clung to him abandoning herself
to the sensual pleasure she was experiencing.  They melded together,
tongues seeking and stroking in the deepest of kisses. Nat kicked off her
pumps and, for the second time that night, Nick loving undressed her. This
time, however, she willingly assisted him in removing his clothes. Her soft
hands stroking his skin as she peeled off his shirt, trousers and
underclothes. Nick's shoes had followed her own and soon their clothes were
in crumpled piles on the floor.  Nick held Nat's cool, soft body against
him. His hands roamed down her satiny skin and he cupped the cheeks of her
butt in them. He ground his hips into her, his steel hard shaft rubbing
against her pubic curls.

Nat could feel the calling of Nick's blood to her. Her body was alive with
feelings, as his every caress seemed to send electric shocks through her
nerves. She could feel her own moistness as her body readied itself to
accept his manhood in it. When he lifted her from her feet and laid her on
the bed, she held on to him, pulling him down on top of her. As she kissed
and licked his jaw and neck, her fangs made small scratches and a few
droplets of Nick's blood found her tongue. The force of his passion that
her new senses enabled her to feel caused her to moan with need and when
Nick nibbled on her throat, she felt her entire body screaming with the
need to feel him deep inside her. She parted her legs, and felt him slip
between them. The head of his cock pressed against her clit and she cried
out as Nick rubbed it against her. She could feel her orgasm beginning to
build.

Nick inhaled deeply, the scent of Nat's blood sweetened even more by her
arousal. As he rubbed against her and watched her passion filled face, his
body responded and he began to rise toward his fulfillment. As Nat writhed
and moaned in ecstasy beneath him, he slid into her tight, moist opening.
He began to thrust in her, slowly at first but with ever increasing speed
and force. When Nat screamed his name, begging for her release he lowered
neck to her mouth.

Nat hesitated only and instant as her new instincts took over. She plunged
her fangs into Nick's neck and drank the honey nectar of his blood. Any
doubt that he had loved her only for her mortality was vanquished as she
received the full power of what his blood offered. His love for her was a
shining flame that warmed her and gave her comfort. As her orgasm washed
through her she held Nick close, withdrawing her fangs and baring the
slender column of her own throat to him. The feel of his fangs slipping
into her flesh sent a new wave of orgasmic pleasure through her body that
was enhanced by the shared sensation of Nick's release. Her heart was
filled with her love for him and she knew through the link they now had
that he was reveling in its power. The intense love they held for each
other filled both her mind and she sighed in total contentment.

Nick felt all of Nat's joy, wonder and most of all love through their link.
His own release shook him as he drank from her. The sweetness of her seemed
augmented by her now vampiric state and Nick knew that he would be content
to spend all of eternity in her arms. Sliding off her, he snuggled her
against him.  As he slowly softened inside her, he held her in his arms.
The languidness of total satisfaction filled both of them. Secure in one
another's embrace, they shared gentle kisses of pure love and happiness as
they drifted into sleep that was filled with dreams of a shining future.
