Chapter 1
*************

Nick pulled the Caddy into the latest Toronto crime scene.  The area was
already a buzz with reporters and photographers as Nick quickly scanned the
area and saw Natalie's car already parked off to the side.

Schanke sighed, "Man-o-man, it's a three ring circus."

Nick nodded, "Yeah, just remember...no comment."

Schanke looked at his partner of nearly three years.  "Since when do I have
a problem with reporters?"

"You don't...I'm just reminding you of the Captain's little pep talk the
other night."  Nick raised his eyebrow at his partner.

Schanke searched his memory then the light of a new dawn broke, "Oh
yeah...man...Cohen was fired up that night after what Davis and Teal told
the reporters."

Nick only nodded his agreement as he and Schanke quickly exited the car and
headed towards the yellow tape.  Nick held the tape up for Schanke as he
ducked under and Nick followed closely behind him.  As Nick approached, the
smell of human blood immediately caught his attention.  He raised his hand
to his nose to try and stifle the aroma.  He looked over towards the scene
and noticed the familiar figure kneeling down eagerly taking notes.

Natalie quickly went about her tasks.  The media circus was causing problems
for her as the reporters kept jumping through the lines.  Just as she was
about to stand, another one had her cornered.  She suddenly found a
microphone stuck in her face.  She raised her hand to her brow as the light
hit her smack in the eyes.  "Miss Lambert, any comments.  How was the victim
found?"

Confused, Natalie responded, "What???"

"Any thoughts as to the ......"

Suddenly the reporter found himself being drug by his tie back towards the
line.  A hand was waved in front of the photographer's face and pushed back.
Nick angrily yelled toward the uniformed officer, "Get these two out of
here!  Their hampering the investigation."

The reporter straightened his tie and looked at Nick.  "We have every right
to be here.  The public needs to know."

Nick bristled, "Once the investigation is finished, we will have a full
statement.  Not before."

The reporter began to speak again, then noticed the gold flecks in Nick's
eyes.  As his microphone fell to his side, two officers quickly came up and
ushered the two reporters back toward the tape.  The reporter stood on the
sidelines.  He didn't see what he thought he just saw.  It was the light
playing tricks on him.

Nick turned and walked back towards Natalie.  She was still rubbing her
eyes.  The bright light had nearly blinded her.  Nick approached and placed
his hand on her elbow.  "Are you alright?"

As she finished rubbing her eyes she replied, "Yeah.  He was just there all
of the sudden.  No warning."

Nick's other hand brushed across her cheek as he looked into her eyes.
"Don't worry.  He *won't* be bothering you again."

Natalie looked over to the side and saw the reporter standing there with his
mouth slightly open, then chuckled to herself.  She looked at Nick, "I take
it...you had a little talk with him?"

Nick grinned with his boyish charm, "Just a little one."

Natalie laughed as she turned away from Nick and looked down again at the
body.  Nick's hand released her elbow as she knelt again at the body.  Nick
followed behind her.

"Stabbed.  Looks like TOD approximately 2 hours ago.  I'll know more when we
get her back...."  Natalie stopped as she noticed Nick looking towards the
dumpster.  Her gaze followed his.  "What?"

Nick stood and took Natalie's hand to have her accompany him.  If what he
thought he sensed was real...he would need her.  Slowly Nick and Natalie
approached the dumpster.  Natalie looked at Nick with confusion, then she
heard the subdued cry.  Natalie's hand came across her mouth, "Oh no!"

Nick looked at Natalie for a quick second, then began to frantically and
carefully searched the dumpster.  After a few moments his movements slowed.
He gently pulled out a pink blanket and cradled it into his arms.  Natalie's
quivering hand came up and gently touched the infant's face.  A tear fell
down her cheek as she took the baby from Nick's arms.

"Nick, how could anybody do this?"  Her voice was shaky.

As Natalie cradled the infant in her arms, Nick watched as she tried to
sooth the infants cries by putting her finger into it's mouth.   After a few
moments, Natalie pulled the blanket back and tried to determine the baby's
condition.  "She's hungry, but other than that...I think she's okay."
Natalie smiled and cooed into the baby's face.  "Yes she is.  She's just a
little bit hungry.  Awe.  Cootchy coo."

Nick stood and watched Natalie in amazement.  A smile crept across his face
as he watched the motherly attentions Natalie paid to the infant.  As he
watched, she looked at him, "Nick...Do you think our victim could be the
mother?"

Nick looked at the body lying on the ground.  As he did, Schanke noticed the
two by the dumpster.  He quickly walked over, "And what is....."  His mouth
flung open as he noticed the baby in Natalie's arms.  "Where did that come
from?"

Nick motioned towards the dumpster, "In there.  Natalie and I heard her
crying."

Schanke walked over and instantly fell in love with the small angelic face
staring at him.  "Hello there."  He put his finger in the infant's hand,
which instantly put an iron grip on it.  "What have you got there?  Have you
got my finger?"

Nick couldn't believe it.  What was it about an infant that turned everyone
into mush?

"She's got quit a grip.  Do you think she belongs to the victim?"  Schanke
continued cooing the baby.

Nick looked again at the woman face down on the damp pavement.  He looked at
Natalie and Schanke both awing and ohing over the baby.  "We should call
family services.  They can take care of the baby until we can determine if
she does."

Natalie's heart sank at Nick's words.  A small frown came across her face.
"I guess you're right."  She readjusted the baby in her arms.  "I'll just
watch her until they get here."

Nick noticed the sadness that came over Natalie.  Schanke removed his hand
from the baby and sighed, "I'll go make the call."  He turned and headed
towards the Caddy.

Natalie continued to rock the small infant in her arms.  "I'll go sit in the
Caddy.  I can close the door and block out some of this noise until someone
can get here."  Her sad eyes met Nicks.  He looked at her, then ran his hand
across the infant's frail cheek, "Okay.  I'll bring them to you when they
get here."  Natalie turned and slowly walked towards the car.  Nick
continued to watch her as he heard her begin to sing a lullaby as she left.

Chapter 2
******************

After nearly an hour of waiting, a blue van pulled up to the crime scene.  A
young woman exited and walked over to one of the officers.  "Excuse me.  I'm
looking for a Detective Knight."

Nick heard the young woman's inquiry and motioned to her, "I'm Knight."

She smiled and walked over, "Hi, I'm Miss Aldred from Children and Family
Services.  I believe you had someone call our office about an abandoned
infant?"

Nick smiled and shook her hand.  "Yes, Miss Aldred.  She's right over here."
Nick motioned for the woman to follow her towards the Caddy.  As Nick
approached, he could see Natalie carefully cradling the baby in her arms
rocking her and singing.  He opened the door, "Nat, this is Miss Aldred.
She's from Children and Family Services about the baby."

Natalie weakly smiled at the young woman standing before her.  She tried to
raise her hand, but got caught in the blanket.

"That's okay Nat." said the woman as she crawled into the back seat of the
Caddy.  Natalie protectively held the young infant in her arms as Miss
Aldred reached for the baby.  "Let's see here."  As the other woman cradled
the baby in her arms, Natalie instantly felt a sinking feeling in the pit of
her stomach.

Nick watched Natalie's expression.  He could tell...she was already
attached.  He could see the sadness in her eyes as she watched the other
woman check the baby over.    "She looks healthy to me.  Possibly a little
hungry, but other than that, she's fine."  Natalie's eyes met Nick's.

Natalie's voice was dry as she spoke, "That's what I thought.  I checked her
when we found her."

The other woman nodded at Natalie's assessment.  Natalie was delighted as
she gave the baby back to her while she wrote some notes.  The smile that
crept across her face did not go unnoticed by Nick.

The young woman scratched her head and began to write, "Well, all I can
really put down is Baby girl and where she was found.  The hard part now
will be to find a place to keep her until we find out who she is. "  She
looked at Nick.  "You're checking the identity of the young woman found in
the alley to see if possibly she is the mother?"

Nick nodded, "Yeah, we found a billfold about 15 minutes ago.  They are
sending a car over to the address now."

Natalie backtracked on her earlier comment, "What did you mean by it would
be hard to find a place to keep her?"

The young woman sighed, "Unfortunately, the shelter is already over crowded.
I'm afraid I'm going to have to make some calls and see if I can't find a
family to take the baby.  But, I already know it's going to be tough to find
a family to take care of her.  We just don't have that many volunteers."

Nick noticed the expression coming over Natalie, but before he could
speak...Natalie eagerly pleaded, "I'll keep her."

Nick was stunned.  "Nat?!"

She looked at him, "What?  I can take care of a baby."

He shook his head.  "Nat, you don't have what it takes to take care of a
baby."

Natalie looked at him funny.  "What do you mean I don't have what it takes?"

Nick noticed the hurt expression on her face and instantly corrected
himself, "I mean...you don't have the equipment.  A crib, diapers, bottles,
formula...that sort of stuff.  And besides, who will watch the baby while
you're at work?"

Natalie looked into the baby's face.  Nick continued, "A baby is a lot of
work Nat.  Your life would turn upside down."

Natalie couldn't help but suppress her laughter as she looked at Nick.  She
thought to herself, 'and a vampire hasn't upset my life?'  She shook her
head.  "Nick, I can do this.  I can get what I need and there is a daycare
center at the morgue.  I can take her to work with me and keep her there.
It's just up on the next level."  Natalie turned to the young woman, "I can
do this.  Please, let me try."

The young woman watched Natalie cradle the baby in her arms.  "Well, I
wouldn't normally do this, but..."

Natalie pleaded, "Please."

Nick was shaking his head.

The woman looked at Natalie.  She knew Natalie by reputation only, but what
she had heard about the young woman was all excellent.  She was going on a
gut instinct.  "Okay.  I just need to get a few details."

Natalie's face lit up as she held the baby closer.  "Thank you."  She looked
at Nick.  He was not as enthusiastic as her, but she didn't care.  For some
reason she needed to do this.  She couldn't explain it.  She just knew she
had to do it.

Chapter 3
**************

The next evening Nick decided to stop by Natalie's on his way to work.  He
walked up to her apartment and heard Natalie singing and toys rattling.  He
knocked on the door.

"Just a minute."  Came a cheerful voice.

Nick could hear toys being flung towards the couch was she came towards the
door.  Natalie peeked through the peephole and saw Nick.  She smiled as she
opened the door.  "Hi Nick."

Nick noticed Natalie's attitude.  She was happy, bubbly, and full of energy.
He couldn't remember the last time he had seen her so joyful.  He walked
into her apartment and noticed all the baby things strung around.  He
thought to himself, 'She must have cleaned out a store.'  He walked over
near the couch with Natalie close behind.  The baby was sitting on the floor
in one of those bouncy things he had heard about.  Natalie walked around and
knelt beside the baby.  "Look Caitlin we have a guest."

Nick looked puzzled, "Caitlin?"

Natalie picked the baby up and stood before Nick, "Well, I couldn't just
call her *Hey You* all the time.  I had to call her something.  I've always
liked the name Caitlin."

Natalie heard the buzzer go off in the kitchen.  She handed Caitlin to a
very apprehensive Nick, "Here, take her for just a few moments.  That's her
formula."  Natalie turned and headed towards the kitchen before Nick could
object.  Nick stood holding the small infant in his arms.  He looked around
at the apartment again and yelled, "Nat, you've bought an awful lot of
stuff.  How long do you think you're going to have her?"  Nick sat down on
the couch and heard a slight squeffle.  He reached beneath him and pulled
out a small rubber duckie.  He only shook his head and set the duck on the
table.

Natalie placed the bottle onto the counter top to calm herself.  She knew
Nick was right.  She had gotten a little carried away at the store, but she
couldn't help it.  She sighed and yelled back to him, "I don't know
Nick...perhaps a few days?"

She felt the tears threaten as she thought of when she might have to give
Caitlin up.  She pulled herself together and walked back into the living
room.  She stopped and stared at Nick sitting on the couch with the small
bundle in his arms.  Nick looked up and smiled.  "I think she's hungry.  She
bit me."

Natalie laughed, "Nick she can't bite.  She hasn't got any teeth.  She may
have pinched, but...by the way..how did it feel to get bit back."  A small
playful grin appeared on her face as Nick looked up.

Nick laughed, "Here.  Feed her."  Nick rose and began to hand Caitlin to
Natalie, then Natalie held her hands out.

"No Nick, here.  You feed her.  It's easy."  Natalie handed the bottle to
Nick and snickered under her breath.

"Nat!  I can't feed her."  The look on Nick's face was priceless.  Natalie
wished she had a camera.

"Sure you can."  Natalie walked behind the couch and wrapped her arms around
Nick as he sat back down.  "Here like this."

Her arms wrapped around him and gently brushed against him.  She positioned
the bottle securely in his hand and raised his hand to help him guide the
bottle to Caitlin's mouth.  Her other hand guided his hand to protecting the
young ones head.  Nick stared in amazement as he watched the child devour
the nourishment.  He leaned back and enjoyed the sensation of Natalie's arms
and hands resting upon his.  He could feel her warm breath as she breathed
against his neck and her head rested slightly against his.

After a few moments, she released Nick...much to his disappointment.  She
walked back around and sat beside him on the couch.  She saw the smile on
Nick's face as the baby drank.  She placed her hand on Nick's shoulder.
"See I told you you could do it."  She rested her chin on her hand on his
shoulder.

Nick smiled.  "This isn't all that hard.  Just open mouth...insert bottle."

After a few more minutes, Caitlin finished eating.  Natalie looked at Nick,
"Now burp her."

Nick looked at her, "Burp her?"

"Yeah, to get the gas out of her stomach.  You have to put her on your
shoulder and gently pat her back."  Natalie draped a towel across Nick's
shoulder.

He looked at her.  "What's that for?"

Natalie looked into his eyes and smiled, "Trust me Nick."

Natalie helped Nick readjust the baby and showed him how to gently pat her
on her back.  After only a few seconds, Nick heard a small burp and began to
smell something strange, "Nat?"

Natalie began to laugh, "It's okay Nick.  That's what the towel was for.
Sometimes there's a little bit of spit up.  That's all."

Nick wrinkled his face.  "Gross"

Nat only nodded her head, "Yep, I'll bet your mother said the same thing
when you spit up on her."

That was not an image Nick cared to dwell on.  Nick continued to hold the
baby.  "Nat, I think... <sniff>  I think it's more than spit up."

Natalie leaned in and immediately sat back, "I think you're right.  Since
you found it...you get to clean it."

Nick sat with a horrified look on his face.  His mouth could barely move, "I
wha...."

Natalie went over and pulled a diaper from the bag.  Nick rose from the
couch.  "Here Nat."  Nick hurriedly handed the baby to Natalie.  He patted
his pockets and pulled his car keys from the pocket.  "I'm late for work.  I
just wanted to stop by and see how you were getting along...that's all."

Natalie adjusted the baby in her arms and held the diaper towards Nick,
"What about this?"

Nick shook his head and hands, "You're on your own."  He quickly turned and
headed towards the door.  "I'll see you at work Nat."  He opened the door
and hastily exited.

Natalie stood and looked at Caitlin.  She began to laugh uncontrollably. "I
wonder what scared him."

Chapter 4
************

Nick strolled into the precinct and sat quietly down at his desk.  Within a
few moments, he could hear a polka tune being badly imitated coming down the
hall towards him.

As Schanke rounded the corner he waved hello to his fellow co-workers.  Nick
settled back into his chair and only stared at his polka lovin' partner.

Schanke walked up to Nick's desk and sat on the corner.  "Evening Nick."  He
looked like the cat who ate the canary.

Nick gave his partner a quizzical look, "And how was your day?"

Schanke grinned, "Great!  Couldn't have been better.  I spent the day with
Jenny.  I chaperoned her class on a field trip to the zoo.  We had a great
time.  Kids....gotta love 'em."  Schanke patted his partner on the shoulder,
then walked around the desk and sat in his own chair.  "You know Nick,
everybody should have a couple of kids.  They're what makes life worth
living."  Schanke continued grinning as he pulled the day shifts report on
the murder victim from the previous night.

Nick sat with his chin propped up on his hands and stared into space.  He
couldn't help but remember how happy Natalie had been tonight.  She was a
whole *new* Natalie.  She hadn't even asked him once about the vitamin
pills, tanning bed, or how the latest protein shake had tasted.  In fact,
Nick now felt kind of like a second wheel.  The whole time he had been in
her apartment everything had revolved around the baby.  Nick was startled
from his reverie as Schanke sailed a paper towards him.  "Nick!"

Nick shook the cobwebs from his brain.  "I'm listening."  Nick looked at the
crumpled paper, then slowly asked, "What did you say?"

Schanke rolled his eyes.  "I said, the officers who went to the address last
night found a picture of the victim.  They did a little more searching and
discovered baby things.  Looks like the baby belonged to her."

Nick tapped his finger on the desk.  "Did they find out what happened?"

Schanke looked at the other paper on his desk, "Yeah, they interviewed the
neighbors and pulled some old police reports.  Her name was Heather Smits.
Apparently, she shares the apartment with her boyfriend, Keith Drake.  The
neighbors said the baby belonged to the couple, her name is Katherine.
According to the prior reports, officers have been sent to the apartment
numerous times for domestic disputes."  Schanke shook his head.  "Looks like
things got out of hand this time."  He pulled a picture of the baby from the
folder.  "Here...they brought this back.  Looks like our baby."  He handed
the photo to Nick.

Nick took the picture and looked at it.  He sat it down on the desk and
sighed, "Katherine."  He looked at Schanke, "The boyfriend?"

Schanke riffled through the papers.  "Nadda..zip.  Nobody knows where he is.
One neighbor said he wasn't *thrilled* about the baby."  Schanke threw the
papers on the desk.  "My guess...he's long gone by now."

Nick shook his head.  "Have them run a check and see if they can't find
Heather Smits next of kin.  Surely somebody loves this baby."

Schanke nodded and started to leave, "I'm on it."  He got past Nick's desk,
then stopped.  "Hey Nick...you gonna let Nat know?"

Nick picked the picture up and stared at the smiling face.  "Yeah, I'll go
over now.

**************
Chapter 5
**************

Nick pushed the door to Natalie's lab open, but stopped half way through.
Standing over in the corner were three women laughing.  He could see Grace
holding the baby in one arm and holding a stuffed lamb in the other.  As the
lamb squeaked, a small grin would go across the baby's face.  Grace laughed,
"Isn't she cute!  That smile is worth a thousand words."

Natalie chimed in, "I know.  I can't get enough of her.  She's precious.
She really is a good baby.  I haven't had a moments problem with her."
Natalie leaned over and kissed the baby on the forehead.

Nick's heart fluttered.  He swallowed hard as he watched Natalie stroke the
baby's forehead and smile with contentment.  He recognized the other woman
in the room.  It was Diane Watts from the Daycare upstairs.  Diane took the
baby from Grace's arms.  "I know Nat.  It has been so long since we've had a
baby in the daycare, but she really is good.  She's no problem at all, but I
had better get her back upstairs."

As Diane turned toward the door, Natalie and Grace turned also.  All three
women suddenly noticed Nick standing in the doorway.  Nick smiled nervously,
"Hi."

Natalie stepped forward. "Nick, how long have you been there?"

Nick's feet shuffled as he came into the room and let the door close. "Not
long."

Diane continued walking toward the door.  "Nat, she'll be ready when your
shift is over.  I'll go feed her now."  Diane smiled at Nick as she left the
room. "Bye Nick."

Nick only waved as the woman left.  He turned to Natalie and Grace.  Just as
he was about to speak...Grace let out a squeal, "Oh my...I'll be back later.
I still have this lamb.  I'll just take it upstairs."  Grace was smiling as
she left the room.

Natalie laughed as she watched Grace leaving and looked at Nick, "She likes
babies...what can I say?"  Natalie shrugged.

Natalie turned and sat at her desk.  She had to ask the question, even
though she probably already knew the answer.  "So, what brings you over here
Nick?"

Nick walked over and sat on the edge of Natalie's desk.  "We have an id on
the body."

Natalie cocked her eyebrow, "And the baby?"

Nick nodded, "Yeah.  She belonged to the woman.  The baby's name is
Katherine."

Natalie sat back in her chair.  That odd, strange feeling had returned to
the pit of her stomach.  "The father?  family?"

Nick shook his head.  "Looks like the father is the one who killed the
mother and put the baby in the dumpster.  Schanke is checking now for the
next of kin."

Natalie shook her head.  A small tear threatened to fall.  "I don't get it
Nick.  She's just a baby.  How?"  Her voice was choked with emotion as she
spoke.  "How could he do that to her?  His own daughter?"

Nick only shrugged.  Natalie's hand quickly wiped the tear from her eye.
She rose from her chair and started to walk by Nick.  Nick grabbed a hold of
her hand as she passed.  He gently caressed her hand as he spoke.  "Nat, do
you think it's such a good idea to get so attached?"

Nick could see the venom shoot from her eyes.  She quickly pulled her hand
from his.  "No.  I'm fine Nick.  How can this not effect you?  She's an
innocent.  She didn't ask for any of this.  She's a victim of circumstance
and I'm just trying to help her through it as best as I can."

Nick quickly stood beside her, "Nat, I didn't mean you shouldn't feel
anything.  It's just...isn't there something more going on here?"  Nick
nearly choked on his next words, but he spoke before he thought.  "Maybe you
wish you had a *normal* life.  Maybe you would have a husband and a baby of
your own to take care of if I hadn't shown up?"  He took a deep intake of
air and held it as he finished.

Natalie stood dumbfounded staring into his face.  She barely whispered,
"Nick?"

He brushed past her and stopped near the examining table.  His hand ran
through his hair.  "I've watched you Nat.  You're a different person around
the baby."  He turned to look into her face.  Pain clearly etched in his own
face as he continued. "I can see the longing in your eyes Nat.  If I stay
around..."

"Whoa!!!!!!"  Natalie walked over and stood in front of him.  She placed her
hands upon his chest and stared into his blue eyes.  "You're not leaving!"

His hands came up and captured hers.  "Nat as long as I'm here...you don't
have a chance for a normal life.  I'm in the way.  No man will come near you
as long as I'm here.  I tend to be a little protective."

Natalie's breathing and heart rate increased.  "Nick, I don't want you to
leave.  That's what we're working for.  To make you mortal...I thought
we...," her words trailed off as his finger touched her lips.

"Nat, it's a one in a billion shot.  You deserve *so* much more. You can't
wait for me."  He released her hands and started towards the door.

Natalie followed and put her hands on his back, "It's my life Nick.  If I
want to wait until hell freezes over it's my choice!  Don't you dare walk
out on me!"  Tears began to fall down her cheeks.

Nick didn't turn.  He took hold of the door.  "Nat, you would be better off.
By staying...all I can bring you is regret."  He opened the door and went
through.

Natalie stood in her lab.  She looked at the closed door and at the spot
Nick had been standing in.  She brought her hands up and hugged herself.  A
cold chill ran down her spine as the tears began to fall down her cheeks.
Was he serious?  Was he going to leave her?

With a burst of energy she grabbed for the handle, opened the door, and
stepped into the hallway.  She looked both ways, but it was empty.  She
stood and screamed, "NICK!!!"  There was no answer.  She collapsed against
the wall breathing heavily.  He can't be serious?!

***********
Chapter 6
***********

Natalie drove by Nick's loft on the way home.  It was well past sun up as
she parked outside the garage door.  She got out and peered through the
windows to see his Caddy parked in the garage.  She returned to her own car
and looked at Katherine strapped in the car seat behind her.  "Hey little
one...at least he's still here.  But I think I'll let him cool down a bit
before I talk to him again."  She turned her car for home...she and Nick
needed to talk, but as long as he was in town she figured his words were
only spoken in the heat of the moment.

As Natalie drove home Nick's words haunted her.  How often she had wondered
herself what her life would have been like without Nick?  She sighed heavily
as she carried Katherine into her apartment and prepared for bed.  She laid
upon her bed listening to the cooing sounds from Katherine as her mind
wondered through time.

Before she met Nick?  She had a few friends.  But working the night shift
kind of puts a damper on ones social life.  She was going to work when
everyone else was out meeting and mixing.  Then, she was sleeping while most
of the world worked.  Before Nick, her life was dull, boring, and no
direction.

Katherine whined and Natalie rose to tend to the young child's needs.  As
she changed the diaper, she couldn't help but wonder.  Would she have a baby
of her own?  She only shook her head, "Hey Katherine...men are fickle."
Katherine only giggled as Natalie tickled along her rib cage and continued
to coo.  After a few moments, Natalie picked her up and walked around the
room with the young one held snuggly against her shoulder.  How often she
had dreamed of a moment like this?  She sighed.  In all her dreams of a
family there was only one other person who was a steady constant...Nick.

She hummed a small tune as she gently swayed back and forth putting
Katherine to sleep.  After only a few moments, she laid the sleeping infant
back into the crib.  Natalie stood over the railing looking at her small
features.  She ran her hand over Katherine's back...the baby totally
oblivious now to the world around her.

Natalie turned and resumed laying upon the bed.  Try as she may, sleep would
not come.  Her own doubts and fears continued to plague her.  Was Nick
serious?  Would he leave?  He had threatened leaving before, but he had
always stayed.  What would she do?  Her life completely revolved around
Nick.  The void from his leaving would be more than she could bear.  The
tears slowly seeped from her eyes.  Nick was her life.  Without Nick she
didn't want to go on.  You only truly love once and Nick was her true love.
If only she could be sure he felt the same way?

After nearly an hour, Natalie had fallen into a restless sleep.  Her dreams
tortured her....images of Nick leaving, her going to the loft and finding an
empty void...an overpowering urge in later years of being watched by a young
and vibrant blond vampire.  Always close, but never touching.  As Natalie
tossed and turned,  the day slowly slipped away.  Evening approached.

*************

Nick paced the loft for the hundredth time.  How could he have lost his
control in front of Natalie?  As he replayed the evening in his mind, he
could barely believe the words that had escaped from his own lips.  How
could he worry the one and only person that truly matters to him in this
life?  Hell...not just this life.  Nat was the one person he had been
searching for all these centuries.

Nick grabbed another bottle from the fridge and removed the cork.  He walked
over and sat on the couch.  He loosened the tie to his robe and sat back on
the couch staring at the ceiling.  He shut his eyes as he thought of
Nat...his friend..his confidant..his love?  Nick shuddered.  He loved
Natalie.  All the years they had spent dancing around each other.  Each
being careful never to vocalize their true feelings, but each knew they were
there.  It was better left unsaid.  It made their lives simpler.  Better
never to risk the emotion.  But the emotions were there just the same.

Nick sighed.  In a way he did truly believe what he told Natalie.  He should
leave.  As long as he stayed, her life could never be complete. He took a
long drink from the green bottle.  He held it up to the light and watched
the liquid through the glass...he had traded his own mortality for this.
But, he thought, if he hadn't, he would never have met Natalie.  His life
would have been over centuries ago.  It was too much to analyze...he was
damned if he did and damned if he hadn't.

As he sat on the couch rationalizing his life.  He came to a decision.  He
would leave.  It was best for all concerned, especially for Natalie. He
loved her too much to deprive her of a happy *normal* future.  He would
finish this case...then leave.

Chapter 7

**Three nights later**

Cohen rapidly came out of her office and walked over to Schanke and Nick.
"We have a lead on the boyfriend.  They think he's held up downtown at one
of those sleazy hotels."  She handed the paper to Nick.  "I needed you two
there five minutes ago."

Nick and Schanke both nodded.  Schanke spoke as they both turned to leave,
"On our way."

**********

Natalie continued tapping her pencil nervously on the desk.  She knew Nick
had been in to work the past three nights, but he had yet to come by the
morgue.  He hadn't called or even sent Schanke in his place.  She had,
however, received a call from Miss Aldred from Children and Family Services.
Thanks to Schanke's lead, they had located Katherine's grandparents.  They
had been vacationing in Europe.  They had changed their plans and, more than
likely, would arrive in Toronto in two nights.

Natalie sighed.  After Katherine was gone, she would deal with Nick and not
before.  Katherine had caused part of the problem...and Natalie knew in a
way she was to blame for it also.  It was true, Katherine had stirred up a
lot of maternal instincts that Natalie had never really truly known she had.
Once things had returned to normal, she would confront Nick.  She would make
him understand how she felt. She loved him and her life would not be
complete without him.

*********

Nick and Schanke hauled Keith Drake into the squad room.  He was unshaven
and dirty.  Apparently, he had been on the run ever since the murder of
Heather.  From what Nick could sense from the man, he had no regrets from
killing the woman or dumping the infant into the dumpster.  As they had
apprehended him, he continually repeated, "It was all her fault!  If she
hadn't gotten pregnant none of this would have happened."

Cohen stepped from her office as the man continued to rant and rave.  She
yelled to Nick, "Get him out of here!"

Nick was none too polite as he pulled the man to his feet and motioned for
the uniformed officers to take him to holding.  Cohen walked over to Nick
and Schanke, "He sounds like a real winner.  Good job on bringing him in."

As she started to walk away, Nick stopped her.  "Captain, wait."

She turned on her heels, "Yes...is there something else, Detective?"

Nick opened his middle desk drawer and removed a piece of paper.  He handed
the folded paper to Cohen.  "I'll finish the paper work on this and
then...," his voice trailed off as he motioned to the paper.

Cohen opened and read the note.  Once she finished reading, she looked at
him puzzled and asked, "You can't be serious?"

Schanke looked at the two of them.  "Somebody wanna clue me in here?"

Nick stood shuffling his feet with his head bent down. "It's serious,
Captain.  I only stayed around to finish this case."

Cohen shook her head, "May I ask why you're resigning?"

Schanke looked at Nick, "You're what?"

Nick looked up into her eyes, "It's personal, Captain.  It's for the best I
leave."

Cohen only nodded.  If it were personal, she wouldn't get it out of him.
She turned to head toward her office, then turned back, "We'll miss you,
Detective."

Nick only smiled, "I'll miss everyone too, Captain."  Cohen returned to her
office.

Schanke stood with his mouth open.  Nick looked at his partner and tried to
lighten the situation by teasing, "Close your mouth, Schanke.  You'll catch
a fly."  Nick walked over to his desk and took out some papers and began to
write.

Schanke shook his head and walked up beside his partner.  Schanke couldn't
contain the bitterness in his voice, "Leaving.  No explanation.  Just Bye!
See you around some time.  Have a nice life."   He threw his hands up into
the air.

Nick put his pencil down and turned to Schanke.  "I'm sorry."  He began to
say something else, but Schanke continued to talk beneath his breath.  Nick
shrugged.  "Schanke, I don't know what to say.  It was hard to make this
decision, but it's for the best."

Schanke turned suddenly, "Best for who?"

Nick turned away.  Schanke walked over and put both his hands on the desk
and leaned into Nick.  He smirked, "It's Natalie isn't it."

Nick turned his head slowly back toward Schanke.  How did he know?  He
sighed, "It's complicated."

Schanke continued to bob his head up and down, "Complicated?  You've been
saying *that* for three years.  What has changed now?"  Schanke thought for
a second.  Then he remembered the looks between the two of them from the
other night.  "The baby.  You're *jealous* of the baby."

Now it was Nick's turn for his mouth to drop.  Jealous?  It *had* to be more
than just jealousy? He watched as Schanke continued...but he didn't hear a
word.  It was more than jealously; maybe it started out that way at first.
But now?  He had already thought this through.  Natalie deserved much more
than he could offer.  *That* was his reason.  It was for Natalie's *own
good.*  But no matter how he said it or what he said, Schanke would never be
satisfied.  He continued to let his partner rave for the next five minutes.

Schanke finally took a seat.  Nick had not responded.  Most of the squad
room had cleared out once Schanke had begun his little rage.  The only ones
left in the room were Nick and Schanke.  Nick turned his head slowly to
survey the emptiness around them.  "I guess you know how to clear a room."

Schanke didn't respond.

Nick ran his hand over his upper lip.  He would try one more time.  His
voice was solemn, "Schanke...Don.  Believe me.  This was the hardest
decision of my life and I didn't make it lightly.  It hurts like hell.  I
don't like what I'm doing, but I *know* everything will be fine.  Natalie
and I, we...well it just won't work.  I've told her this, but she always
believed there was a way.  Don...there isn't.  As long as I'm here Natalie
won't be happy.  She deserves love.  I can't give her that or even half of
what she needs or wants."

Schanke listened to Nick's excuse.  Perhaps he had been wrong.  Maybe what
he thought was a mutual affection between Nick and Natalie had always been
one sided.  Nick couldn't give her what she wanted.  It was clear as a
bell...Nick wouldn't commit.

"Well, Nick, I can't say that I haven't always hoped that you two could work
it out...because I have.  You two always seemed so happy together.  You
laugh and kid around all the time.  I just thought and hoped that maybe..."
Schanke raised his head and looked at Nick.  "Are you sure?"

Nick nodded.  "I'm sure.  Now help me with this paper work.  Where do we
keep Form H?"

Schanke chuckled, "Your last night here and you *finally* want to do
paperwork.  Figures."

************
Chapter 8
************

The next night, Natalie was busily working on another murder victim.  She
was helping out the precinct across town since their examiner had the flu.
As she dictated her notes, Schanke strolled into the room.  A bright smile
crossed her face as she flipped the recorder off.  "Hi, Schanke.  What's
up?"

"Not much.  Came down to pick up the final report on Heather Smits.  The
Crown attorney needs it for the case.  We caught the boyfriend last night.
They want to prosecute immediately."  Schanke walked over and began to flip
through her papers.

Natalie looked at the door, then to Schanke.  "Nick didn't come with you?"

Schanke dropped the files in his hand.  She didn't know?  Damn!  Schanke
turned and nervously began to twist his hands.  "Um..Nat...He didn't tell
you?"

Natalie continued smiling, "Tell me what?  I haven't seen him in a few days.
We had a little spat and I was letting him cool down."

Schanke walked over toward her.  "Maybe you should put the scalpel down and
sit."

Natalie looked confused, "What?  Why?  Has something happened?"

Schanke reached over and took the scalpel.  "Sit down, Nat."  He led Natalie
over and sat her at her desk.

Natalie snapped her rubber gloves off.  "So?  What's so horrible?"

Schanke looked down sympathetically into Natalie's eyes, "He quit, Nat.  He
resigned last night."

Natalie couldn't believe her ears, "He what?"

Schanke shook his head.  "After we brought Keith Drake in last night, he
gave Cohen his resignation.  He already had it typed and waiting in his
desk, Nat.  He said he had just been waiting to close this case."

Natalie's hands began to tremble.  "What else did he say?  Did he say why?"

Schanke swallowed hard.  "You."

Natalie blinked and clutched her fists.  "Me?"

Schanke nodded.  "Nat, I don't know what your relationship was, but...Nick
seemed to think he couldn't give you what you wanted."

Natalie fought back the tears.

"He said, you deserved love."  Schanke could see the emotions swelling
within Natalie.  Her eyes were lined with unshed tears as her breathing
increased.

"I have to go, Schanke.  I have to find him."  She rose from her chair and
threw her lab coat towards the hook on the wall missing it entirely.

"Nat, what are you going to do?"  Schanke followed her toward the door.

She turned back.  "I don't know, Schanke.  I'll deal with it when I get
there."  She looked at the body on the table, then to Schanke.  "Take care
of that for me will you?"  Then with a quick turn, she was out the door.

Schanke looked at the body on the table and shrugged, "What the hell am I
suppose to do with you?"

************

Natalie drove through every red light getting to Nick's place.  She pulled
her car up to the darkened building and quickly headed for the door.  She
frantically rang the buzzer, but there was no response.  She quickly entered
Nick's security code to gain access to the garage.  As she entered, the
first sight she saw was the Caddy.  A huge tarp had been thrown over the
car.

She shook her fears away and ran to the lift.  Once inside, she punched
madly at the buttons until she felt it engage.  Once it had stopped, she
grabbed hold of the handle and threw the metal door back.  She stepped into
the loft and froze.

She stood there surveying all before her.  She slowly looked around.  Every
stick of furniture had a drop cloth thrown over it.  Natalie walked over and
touched the cloth thrown over the piano, then looked up the stairway.  Her
voice faltered as she yelled, "Nick?"

Her own voice echoed through the room, as her tears began to fall down her
cheeks.  She walked over to the stairway and looked up again.  "Nick, answer
me.  This isn't funny."

Only silence responded.  Natalie slowly walked around the room.  Perhaps he
had left something?  A note?  There was no note.  No goodbye.  He had left
and hadn't even given her the chance to say goodbye.  Natalie walked back
toward the lift and stepped in.  She turned once more to the darkened loft.
Her life would never be the same again.

As Natalie closed the lift door, she did not notice the figure taking flight
from the skylight.

Chapter 9
***********

The next evening, Natalie hurriedly packed Katherine's belongings.  Her
grandparents would be arriving at the Toronto airport on the 9 p.m. flight.
After she finished stuffing the last of the toys and bottles into the bag,
Natalie sat holding the child snuggly in her arms.  She looked at the clock
on the far wall, "Well Katherine, we still have a couple of hours.  What
would you like to do?  Read a story?  Sing a song?"

She ran her hand gingerly over the infants forehead, then kissed her.  The
tear slowly fell down Natalie's cheek.  It was too much, first she lost Nick
and now she was giving Katherine back.  She lifted the infant to her
shoulder as she rose from the chair.  She walked over and stared out into
the night sky from her window and sighed.  "I can't believe he just left.
Not even a goodbye."  She turned from the window and returned to her sofa.
She hadn't noticed the figure hovering in the air and plastered against her
building's wall.  Her words had stung him to the core.

Nick continued to stare into Natalie's window.  Try as he may, he hadn't
gotten far from Toronto when he had turned and came back.  He couldn't just
leave like this.  He had to find a way to let her know how he felt.  To let
her know why he was putting her through this pain.  Yes, he knew it would be
painful for her, but she would recover.  She would go on with her life.
Possibly even marry and have a family of her own.  Nick continued watching
Natalie playing with the infant until she bagan to pick up Katherine's
belongings.  He followed her to the airport.  At least he could see
Katherine placed into the arms of her grandparents.

********

Miss Aldred met Natalie at the terminal.  Katherine's grandparent's plane
was just coming in for a landing when they arrived.

"Hi Natalie!"  Miss Aldred smiled and motioned for Natalie to join her near
an office she had arranged for the meeting.

Natalie nervously approached, "Hi. Are they here yet?"

Miss Aldred motioned at the outer window.  Outside a huge plane was taxiing
into the gate.  "Just arriving.  If you will go inside, I will bring them in
in a few moments."

Natalie nodded and entered the room.  Miss Aldred shut the door and went to
find the Smits.  Natalie looked around at the plain room.  There was a huge
plate glass window that looked into the passageway.  Natalie took a seat
facing the window and watched as the passengers disembarked.  After a few
moments, she saw Miss Aldred shaking hands with an elderly couple.  Natalie
looked into Katherine's sleeping face and smiled.  "Your grandparents are
here, Katherine."  She looked out the window and sighed, then continued to
look into Katherine's face.  "I wonder if you'll know about me when you're
older.  How much I cared and loved you?"  A small tear escaped and rolled
down her cheek.  Natalie was gently rocking the infant as the door opened.

Natalie stood and composed herself.  Miss Aldred quickly introduced Natalie
to the couple.  The elderly woman eagerly came to Natalie's side.
"Kathy...Oh Kathy...my precious girl.  You're all right!"  The woman cried
as she took the infant from Natalie's arms.

Natalie retreated a few steps as the elderly couple began to smother the
infant with kisses and whispering loving comments into her ears.  After a
few moments, Mrs. Smits looked at Natalie, "How can we thank you Dr.
Lambert.  She looks beautiful.  You must have taken great care of her."

Natalie smiled, "It wasn't a problem.  I enjoyed it and you can call me
Nat."  Natalie bit her bottom lip trying to subdue her own tears threatening
to fall.  She quietly addressed the couple, "Please accept my sympathies on
the death of your daughter."

The elderly gentleman looked at Natalie, "Thank you Dr...Nat.  I just wish
Heather had come home.  We knew it was a bad situation here, but she
insisted she could handle it.  I should have...."  His voice trailed off as
he thought of his last conversation with his only daughter.  Mrs. Smits
placed a loving hand on her husband's shoulder.  He looked into Katherine's
sleeping face.  "At least now, we have a piece of her.  She'll never be gone
as long as Kathy is healthy and happy.  We'll be sure of that."

Miss Aldred walked over to the couple.  "I will need this paper work
completed before you can take the baby with you.  If we could all have a
seat, we'll proceed."

Natalie took this as her cue to leave.  "Well, I'll be going."

Natalie began to walk towards the door.  Mrs. Smits handed the baby to her
husband and walked over to Natalie.  She took hold of Natalie's shoulders
and looked her intently in the eyes.  "You have been our saviour.  Thank you
for being so kind."  She pulled Natalie into a warm and comforting hug.

Natalie responded and hugged the woman back.  Natalie whispered into the
woman's ear, "Please take care of her.  She's very special."

Mrs. Smits released Natalie, "I want your photograph and address.  I want
Kathy to know about you when she's older.  Perhaps even meet you later.  I
can tell," the woman placed her hand beneath Natalie's chin.  "it is hard
for you to give her up."

The tears were clearly swimming in Natalie's eyes.  She smiled and agreed to
send them her address and photograph though Miss Aldred.  Natalie slowly
left the room and closed the door behind her.

She began to walk down the gangway into the terminal.  Around her people
were busily walking and running to catch connecting flights or pick up their
luggage from the turnstile.  Natalie walked slowly.  A numbing sensation was
building within her.  She walked out into the short-term parking lot and
headed towards her car.  As she approached, she began to fumble in her pants
pocket for her keys.  Once at the car, she shakily tried to place the key
into the slot.  As her fingers fumbled with the keys, she heard them crash
to the ground.  With a heavy sigh, she lowered herself to the ground.  As
she reached for the keys, she began to weep.  She stood slowly and turned to
lean against the car.  Her tears flowed freely now, as her emotions were
unleashed.  She hugged herself as the ache crashed down upon her.  She bent
over from the intense pain of the loneliness that descended upon her.  She
cried out quietly into the night, "Nick...where are you?"  She straightened
and looked into the night sky.  "I need you.  How could you leave me?"  She
continued crying for several minutes.

From a distance, Nick had watched Natalie's torment.  His heart ached as he
saw her weep and heard her cry out for him, but he did not go to her.  All
this too, would pass with time.  His own tears fell as he watched the woman
he loved in so much pain.  If only she knew, she wasn't alone in this
torture.  He hurt as much as she...his pain would last forever.  He longed
to hold her in his arms.  To hold her soft body passionately against his
own, but to do so could only end tragicly.  He watched as she slowly began
to turn and enter her car.  He had watched enough tonight.  He needed to see
the one person who could help him to make Natalie understand.  He took to
the skies.

Chapter 10
****************

Nick entered the Raven and descended the staircase.  He weaved his way
through the gyrating masses.  The dancers huddled closely as their bodies
touched and grooved to the hauntingly mezmerizing tune being pounded into
the room.  Suddenly Nick felt a hand weave it's way up his chest and around
his neck, "Nichola, it's nice to see you."  The cold supple lips placed a
seductive kiss against his bewildered mouth.

Nick found himself pushing his lips away from the voluptous tempress.  He
took her hands and held them down away from him.  "Janette."

She pulled her hands from Nick's grasp, staring alluringly into his eyes.
Her fingertip rubbed up his chest and came to rest within his golden locks.
"Such a cold greeting, Nichola.  You used to be so happy to see me."

Nick solemnly stared at her, "Where's LaCroix?"

The jealously within Janette flared.  Even without the words, she knew Nick
was bewitched by this mortal.  *His* Natalie.  But, a small smile crept
across her face...why should she worry?  Nick would only be able to have
*fun* with this mortal for another 15-20 years perhaps?  After that, Nick
would be hers again...he always was.  "LaCroix is in the back.  He's heading
to the studio soon to confuse the minds of these simpletons.  He enjoys
toying with them so."

Nick looked harshly into Janette's eyes.  "They're alive.  They have hopes
and dreams.  We are dead.  We can never hope to have what they know is dear
in life.  Family, friends....love."  Nick's voice was hoarse as the final
words left his lips.  He brushed by Janette and headed towards the back
room.

Janette sauntered over to the bar and watched him leave.  "Oh Nichola...not
again."  She took a sip from her glass setting there.  She had time to wait.
This mood too, would pass in time.

*******

LaCroix could sense his son's entrance to the club.  He also felt the
bristling in both of his children, as their conversation appeared to enrage
them both.  LaCroix did not turn as Nick entered the room.  "Good evening
Nicholas.  What do I owe the pleasure of this visit?"

Nick walked in and stopped directly behind LaCroix.  He showed no fear.  "I
need a favor, LaCroix."

LaCroix raised an eyebrow and sat down the notes he had made for his dialog
for tonight.  He turned and found himself face to face with his son.  "What
kind of favor?"

Nick turned away from his master and walked over toward the sofa.  "I want
you to play a song on your program tonight.  A dedication.  I'll give you
the words to say.  Then play the song."

LaCroix's interest was peeked.  "And why would I do this?  My show is not a
hoot nanny, I don't allow requests."

Nick turned, he couldn't back down now.  "I'm leaving, LaCroix.  I've
resigned from the force.  It's time to move on.  But, before I do...I need
to let someone know how I feel."

LaCroix raised a hand to his son as his eyes flecked gold.  Only one person
could radiate this feeling in his son and he knew who. "Feel?  Is this the
same person you told me...'I do not love this woman, LaCroix.  I am only
using her?  Isn't it in my best interest to humor her?'"

Nick began to wonder if he had not made a fatal error in this request.
"Yes, but since I am leaving...the agreement is null and void.  As you were
several centuries ago, I too will have to carry this heartache around.
*THAT* should be payment enough!"

LaCroix looked intently at his son.  The longing he felt for Fleur every day
of his life was like a noose around his neck.  He could see the same pain
and torture now emanating from his own son's eyes.  He smiled wickedly.
"True.  You will have to watch her fall in love with another.  She will bear
*his* children.  She will lovingly hold his body in the night...sharing all
the intimate caresses that your body will never feel.  Your heart will ache
and long for her touch as you see the happiness she brings to another.  As
his hands glide across her body, as yours never dared.  As he makes
passionate love to her all night long."

Nick could feel his anger rising.  If it would keep Natalie safe, he would
allow LaCroix to continue this torment.  But with each sentence, each word,
rage and jealously flared within Nick.  His eyes began to change as his
fangs dropped.  "Enough LaCroix!  I *know* exactly what I'm giving up.  I
don't need you to remind me."

LaCroix stepped back and chuckled at his son.  "It is a very deep pain
Nicholas.  I am *glad*.  In a way, I suppose, I do have my agreement.
Watching your suffering will be repayment.  If I know you, you will never be
far away from her.  You will insist on tormenting yourself.  Watching and
wondering.  What type of man do you think will fill your shoes, Nicholas?
Do you think she will find another tall blond or go to the other end of the
scale...tall and dark?"

Nick continued to clench his fists.  He turned away from LaCroix's petty
game.

"No, I believe the good doctor will find herself a *normal* type of man.
After all, what could top dating a vampire?  She could find herself another
cop...but, that could only remind her of you.  Maybe though,if she married a
cop, his name could be Nick and as her passions overtake her she could cry
out your name in the night."

Nick turned quickly and rushed toward LaCroix.  He grabbed him by the lapel
and held him pinned against the far wall. "Enough!"

LaCroix only laughed at his sons actions.  "Yes Nicholas, this could be
interesting indeed."

Nick released LaCroix and began to leave the room.  LaCroix yelled after
him, "Nicholas, you didn't tell me what song to play or what to say."

Nick halted and turned, "You will do the dedication?"

"Of course, Nicholas."  LaCroix walked over and put his arm around Nick's
shoulder's, "What's a father for?"

*************
Chapter 11
*************

Natalie had taken the night off.  She knew she would be a wreck after
dropping Katherine off at the airport.  She slowly walked into her apartment
and walked over to the couch.  As she sat down, she heard a small squeffle
and reached beneath her.  Natalie sat staring at the small rubber duck.  She
looked around her apartment.  Most of the baby things were gone, except for
some of the bigger pieces.  A church organization was coming by in the
morning to pick them up.

She rose from the couch and aimlessly wandered around her apartment.  Nat
panicked.  For the first time in three years, she didn't know what to do?
Her entire life had revolved around Nick, if she wasn't at his loft, he was
here with her.  Who would she watch movies with?  Who would laugh at her bad
jokes?  Who would keep her safe and comfort her fears?

Natalie walked into her bedroom.  She startled suddenly when she flipped on
the light and Sydney jumped towards her off the bed.  "Sydney!  Don't do
that!  You're as bad as Ni..."

The word caught in Natalie's throat, Nick.  Nick had been her dream.  Her
life.  But now, he was gone.  She walked over toward the bed and sat on the
edge.  The tears threatened to fall again, "Get a grip Lambert.  Apparently
Nick didn't care for you or you wouldn't be going through this now.  If he
cared, he would have stayed.  We would have found a way to be together."

As Natalie continued to rationalize Nick's leaving, the phone rang.  She
pulled herself across the bed to answer it, "Hello."

There was a slight pause.

Natalie's heart jumped, "Nick..is that you?"

Another slight pause.

"Nick, answer..."

"I'm sorry Dr. Lambert, this is not Nick."

Natalie pulled the receiver from her ear and stared at it.  She slowly
brought it back to her ear, "Who is this then?  I recognize the voice."

"I'm flattered.  You must be a loyal listener then."

Natalie searched her memory.  She knew this voice, then it hit her,
"LaCroix?"

LaCroix let out a small chuckle, "Yes Dr. Lambert. I just wanted to be sure
you would be listening to the broadcast tonight.  I have a special
dedication for you from someone who has walked out of your life."

Before Natalie could ask any questions, all she heard was a dial tone.  She
thought for a second then darted into the living room and flipped on the
radio.  She listened as the song finished playing.  Then the eerie voice of
the NightCrawler came across the airwaves.  Once again, there was a hidden
presence outside her window.

"Our topic tonight gentle listeners, "Forbidden Love".  Love...such a
strange word.  It's only four letters, but without it, people don't seem to
be able to survive.  They long for things they cannot have.  Sometimes
risking their very lives for that one chance...that one hope of daring to
feel the emotion.  It's a savage, ancient ritual...finding your perfect
mate.  That one person in a billion who will make your life worth living.
But what happens when you find them, but each of them is too afraid...too
concerned for the other to risk the emotion?  Heartache, sadness, despair?"

There was a short pause.  Natalie sat silently, mesmerized by the voice.

"I know of such a couple my listeners.  I have watched them dance around
each other.  They have played the ritual, but each were too afraid to act.
Now they must separate to go their separate ways.  And what will become of
them now?  Each will find another.  Each will hold and love another, one of
their own kind.  A body aching to touch theirs, but it will never be their
true love.  It will be a weak substitute."

Nick cringed as he heard LaCroix's words.  How could he do this to Natalie?
He could see why he lashed out at him, but Nat?  If he could have been fast
enough he would have flown to CERK and strangled him on the air, but he
could not tear himself away from the vision of Nat.  She sat calmly on the
couch listening to each and every word.  Not a sign of emotion had been
released as she listened to LaCroix.

"Tonight, one of the star crossed lovers has requested a dedication.  His
final farewell to his lady love.  I normally would not do this, but this
couples story is near and dear to my own heart.  For I have watched their
dance.  I have watched their joys and sorrows.  But alas, this could be the
only outcome.  Each moving on to find a new soul to dance the game with.  I
wonder in 20 or 30 years...where this couple may end up?  It would be
interesting to know.  Would it not?"

There was another pause.  Natalie shifted herself on the couch.  Every word
of LaCroix's churned her stomach.  Love!  What could LaCroix possibly know
of love.  She kept listening, surely he was getting to his point eventually.

LaCroix cleared his throat as he continued, "And now our dedication: 'To my
love, my Natalie.  As this will be the last time you will hear from me, I
wanted you to know my true feelings.  I was afraid to show the emotion, but
it was there.  Every time I held you, every time you laughed...I longed for
your touch...the sound of your sweet voice.  I longed to hold you closer in
an intimate embrace, but as we both know...we would only be asking for
disaster.  I could not let that happen.  You were the light of my dark life.
The one person I looked forward to seeing each and every night.  You
brightened my long and dreary days with your presence.  Never
complaining...well hardly ever.  I will miss your smile, your laughter, your
soft touch, and your sweet embrace.  I will love you all the days of my
life, Natalie.  Please don't hate me.  You know, when you think about it,
this is for the best.  You deserve more than I could ever dream to give you.
Please, just remember my love...I will always love you.  Nick.'"

"And now my listeners...our dedication song.  From Nick to his lady
love...Natalie."

<If I should stay
I would only be in your way.
So I'll go but I know
I'll think of you
Every step of the way.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.
You my darling you mmm>

Nick looked through the window.  He could see Natalie sitting on the couch
as the tears freely flowed down her cheeks.  He had poured his heart and
soul out to her in the note and the song.  He now hoped she truly knew all
he felt and would understand his reasoning.  He also had to admit, LaCroix
had done an excellent job once he started reading the note.  He had not
changed one word.

<Bittersweet memories,
That is all I'm taking with me.
So goodbye, please don't cry.
We both know I'm not what you, you need.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.>

Natalie turned and pulled a tissue box from the table.  The note had been
eloquently written.  For the first time in her life, she knew exactly how
Nick felt about her.  It was love.  He truly loved her.  He had left because
he could not give her the type of love she deserved or needed.  She
continued listening to the words of the song.  Each note tore away her
defenses.  If only they could have spoken....

<I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have
All you've dreamed of.
And I wish for you joy
And happiness.
But above all this, I wish you love.>

Nick continued watching Natalie.  His heart filled with emotion.  As the
song entered his ears...his future was bleek.  He would never love again.
Natalie would now move on...he must do the same.

<And I will always love you.
I will always love you. (4x)
I, I will always love you.
You, darling I love you.
I'll always, I'll always love you.>

Nick was gone from her life.  He was attempting a closure.  As the last
cords of the song filled the room, Natalie softly spoke, "I love you, Nick."

Nick's breath caught in his throat as he heard Natalie declare her love for
him.  His hand gently rested upon the pane of glass as he watched her weep.
He spoke softly, "I love you, Nat."

Nick tore himself from her window and flew off into the night into his now
uncertain future.

Chapter 12
************

For the next two weeks at work, people had learned to give Natalie a wide
berth.  Her mood swings had been taken out on most of the department.  At
night she worked...constantly.  During the day, she spent searching for
Nick.  She had gone to most of the places she knew he had liked to *hang
out* at.  Between working and searching...she was exhausted.

To top it all off, now that Nick had resigned, she had found herself
becoming the center of attention for most of the available bachelors at the
precinct.  If she had one more chair pulled out or door opened for her, she
was going to kill someone.

Natalie walked into her apartment after another hopeless lead.  No matter
where she went, it seemed Nick was nowhere to be found.  She walked into her
bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed.  She thought to herself, 'Maybe he
left Toronto altogether?  Maybe that's why nobody has heard from him.'

She lay back on the bed.  Her emotions were completely numb now, she
couldn't even cry anymore.  What was the use?  Tears wouldn't bring him
back.  She lay there staring at the ceiling.  How many times had she laid
there and counted the tiles in the past two weeks?  No matter what she
tried, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, warm milk, sleep had become her enemy.
Every time she fell asleep, she dreamed of Nick.  In her dreams it was
perfect.  He was mortal, they were in love, had children...then a dark cloud
would descend tearing Nick from her embrace.  Natalie awakened once more
covered in perspiration as she screamed his name.

Natalie sat up on the bed and looked at the clock.  She had fallen asleep
for a total of two whole hours...typical of late.  She groaned as she pulled
herself from the downy comforter and walked into the living room.  She stood
there staring.  Her life was a complete shambles.  She didn't even know how
to begin to rebuild it.  She walked over and leaned back on the couch.  She
looked around the neatly kept room, her eyes stopped when she came to the
radio.

For the past two weeks, she had not turned the radio back on.  Every time
she began to turn the switch, she thought of Nick's farewell message.  She
remembered the haunting words as he proclaimed his love for her, all be it
not in person, he had admitted them all the same...then left.  There had
been one place Natalie had been reluctant to visit since Nick's departure,
but desperation for a last chance finally prevailed.

Natalie rose and walked over towards the door and grabbed her car keys.
This was her last chance...if this didn't work.  Natalie shrugged, then said
a silent prayer.  "Please let this work."

****************

Natalie pulled her car to the curb and parked.  She shut off the engine and
sat staring at the metal door.  She clutched her hands to the steering
wheel...should she really do this?  Nick had always warned her to stay
clear, but she was at the end of her rope.  Natalie bit at her bottom lip.
'You can do this.  Just don't let him control the conversation...or back you
into a dark corner.'  Natalie shuddered, if something went wrong more than
likely there would be nothing she could do.  She would either walk out of
this place or be a snack.

With all her courage, she exited the car and walked up to the metal door and
began to bang.  It was still a couple hours before sundown, she wasn't sure
if anyone would be up.  After a few moments, she banged again, "Anybody
there?"

Natalie took a step back as she heard the bolt being released.  The door
flung open, but she could see no one.  Then she heard a voice from within.
"Come in already!  Don't just stand there."

Natalie stepped through the door, then halted.  Again she heard the
irritated French accent, "Shut the door!"

Natalie turned and slammed the heavy door shut.  After a few moments, her
eyes adjusted to the darkness.  Standing down near the bottom of the
stairway was Janette.  Her hair was tousled and she was wearing a silken
negligee with matching robe.  Natalie snickered to herself...not exactly the
glamorous side of Janette.

Natalie walked to the edge of the staircase.  Janette stared at the
apprehensive mortal now before her.  She knew exactly why she was here.
Natalie cleared her throat.  "Have you seen Nick?"

Janette cocked her head sideways, licked at her lips, and smiled wickedly,
"Oh yes, Nicola has been around *a lot* lately.  It's nice to have him home
where he belongs.  Soon it will be like old times again."

Natalie knew exactly what *game* Janette was playing.  Nick had told her
about his previous relationship with Janette.  Natalie spoke bitterly, "Just
don't walk out on him this time.  I know from experience, being left behind
by the one you love...,"  Natalie took a deep breath, then bowed her head
and whispered, "...hurts."  She was not here to play mind games with
Janette. Getting into an argument and letting their tempers flare would not
serve her purpose.

Natalie slowly ran her fingers against the railing, "Is LaCroix here then?"

Janette raised an eyebrow, Natalie's last statement still ringing in her
ears.  Her leaving Nick, was the one regret in her life.  If she had stayed,
perhaps Nick would never have tried to regain his mortality.  She looked
again at the strong willed woman.  Perhaps she had been wrong, but Natalie's
request startled her.  She questioned further, "Why would you want to see
LaCroix?"

Natalie descended the staircase and stood beside Janette, "Look.  I know we
don't agree on things when Nick is concerned.  That's fine.  I would like to
see LaCroix to ask for his help."

Before Janette could respond, a mesmerizing voice was heard from the
shadows.  "Dr. Lambert, so good of you to join us.  I've been expecting
you."  Janette and Natalie both turned to the direction of the voice.  "You
may leave, Janette.  I will deal with the good doctor."

Janette lowered her head in response to her master's request.  As she exited
the room, she hesitated and watched LaCroix approach Natalie.  Janette shook
her head wondering if Natalie knew what she was getting herself into.

Once Janette had left, LaCroix walked over to Natalie's side.  He motioned
for her to have a seat at a table near the bar.  As he walked her over to
the table, Nat felt a little uneasy at the way LaCroix gently held her
elbow.  As they reached the table, LaCroix pulled a seat out for her.  When
she was seated, he too took a chair.  LaCroix's tantalizing voice resounded
through the room again, "And how may I be of assistance, Doctor?"

Natalie studied the man before her.  He was, amazingly, not have bad looking
in his dark suit.  She was starting having serious doubts about her plan,
but...she started to explain.  "LaCroix, I need your help to bring Nick
back."

LaCroix chuckled, "And why, pray tell, would I even consider such an idea?
For the first time in centuries Nicholas is returning to his true nature."
LaCroix leaned in and whispered into Natalie's ear, "A vampire...a
hunter...a killer."

Natalie felt the blood rush to her cheeks.  She turned her head and found
herself nose to nose with LaCroix, "Nick is not a killer!  He wouldn't...not
again!"

LaCroix settled back into his chair, his menacing smile still in place,
"True, he hasn't killed...yet.  That will take some time.  But, in
another...oh say 50 or 60 years...once you're *gone*, it should no longer be
a problem for him.  The guilt at having left you behind will be enough to
send him over the edge."

Natalie stared in disbelief at the man setting opposite of her.  How could
he be so cold and callous?  She would have to take another tactic if she
were to engage his help.  "How about a deal then?"

LaCroix raised an eyebrow, "A deal?  What could you possibly have to bargain
with, Doctor?"

Natalie stood and walked to his side.  She leaned down, placed her hand on
his shoulder and licked her lips.  "Me."

LaCroix chuckled, until he felt Natalie's warm, moist lips touching his neck
just below his ear as she spoke.  An involuntary growl emanated and he found
himself grabbing Natalie by the shoulders, pulling her closer onto his lap.
Natalie trembled as LaCroix responded, she never dreamed she would end up in
this position.  She was just trying to *sweeten the pot*.

Her nerves rattled, she continued on with her bargain.  This was quite
possibly her only chance to get Nick back.  She had already made her
decision.  If she couldn't have Nick as a mortal, then possibly as immortal?
She needed LaCroix to bring her across *if* her plan failed.  Then she could
spend the rest of time hitting Nick upside the head with a ton of bricks if
need be.  She timidly licked her lips, "I take it then you are interested in
the proposition?"  Natalie continued her seduction by running her fingertip
around the shell of LaCroix's ear.

LaCroix breathed hard and caught her hand in his.  The mixture of her
perfume and her rapidly flowing blood intoxicated his senses.  He stared
intently into her eyes.  "My dear, Doctor.  You are playing a *very*
dangerous game.  The stakes are quite high."

Natalie nodded and stared into his eyes longingly. "It's *worth* the price."

LaCroix dropped Natalie's hand, "What must I do to try and help you get your
Nicholas back?"

Natalie quickly explained, "Nick told me he loved me in the song, but he
left for my own good.  I have a song of my own I wish you to play and I have
a message to be read."

LaCroix sighed heavily, "Doesn't anybody just use the phone any more?  My
program is *not* a lonely hearts club, Doctor."

"I know, I know...but I believe you think the price is quite appropriate for
this request."  Natalie stared into his icy blue eyes.

LaCroix shook his head, sliding his hand down Natalie's back. "And what
night am I to play this song?"

Natalie quickly corrected him, "Not just one night.  For one month."

"What!"  LaCroix moaned.

Natalie began to panic.  Maybe she had gone too far?  But what the hell, you
never know until you ask.  "LaCroix, I am willing to have you bring me
across if this doesn't work.  I value my life just a little bit more than
one night."

LaCroix chuckled, "You are willing to do this for him.  To be with *him*
forever?  But, I believe I should add a wrinkle to this *deal*.  Besides
adding you to my family, there is really nothing in it for me."

Natalie's heart sank.  What could he possibly want?  She would let him bring
her across.  What else was there?  The haunting grin reappeared on his face
as he watched the worried, confused look overtake Natalie.  Natalie croaked,
"What else?"

LaCroix raised his hand to her cheek and gently brushed a stray strand of
hair from her face.  "Not only must your Nicholas return in 30 days, but he
must consummate this *so called love* you say you have."

Natalie gasped, "Consummate? But, I thought... I mean Nick told me... a
vampire cannot make love with a mortal."

LaCroix laughed, "A vampire *can* love a mortal my dear, Doctor."  He drew
Natalie closer in his embrace, "It takes years...even centuries of practice.
One mustn't lose control, or you end up draining the lover.  Nicholas is
quite *young* when it comes to mortal and vampire relations...or maybe I
should have told him a few things long ago."

Natalie seethed with anger.  She had listened to Nick's stories about
LaCroix over the past few years, but had hoped that possibly he wasn't *all*
that bad.

LaCroix looked into Natalie's eyes,  "One more part of the deal, I forgot to
mention, but it's so trivial..."

Natalie fumed, "What?"

LaCroix leaned in toward Natalie's ear.  As he spoke softly, his lips
brushed against her cheek,  "If in 30 days, Nicholas has not returned and
you have not consummated your relationship...I will bring you across, but
before you may throw yourself at my wayward son, you will make love to me.
You will completely surrender yourself to me for one night.  Then, you can
have your Nicholas for all eternity."

Natalie quickly tried to break from LaCroix's embrace but found herself
pinned against his chest.  "Are we agreed?"

Her hands pushed against him, until she trembled as she looked into his
eyes.  With defeat written on her face, she nodded, "Agreed."

LaCroix released Natalie from his grasp.  Once Nat was free, she quickly
scrambled to her feet and stepped back several feet.  LaCroix stood and
faced her.  "Tonight.  You will bring the tape and the message."

Natalie nodded.  She quickly turned on her heels and ran toward the stairs.
She turned back to see LaCroix still standing near the bar.  She slowly
walked up the stairs and headed for the door.  LaCroix's gaze held her
constantly as she retreated.  As she turned and reached for the door, "Good
night, Dr. Lambert."

Natalie quickly opened the door and left the club.  Once out in the street,
tears cascaded down her cheeks.  She quickly walked to her car and got in.
She sat there for several moments, after a while, the realization sunk in.
She had made a deal with the devil...was her knight still around to save
her?  Natalie again trembled as doubt filled her mind.  What if LaCroix
already knew if Nick had left Toronto?  Natalie gasped, "Oh God, what have I
done?"

Chapter 13
**************

Natalie entered the radio station.  The tape and note held tightly in her
hand.  She slowly proceeded down the darkened corridor, then she heard the
Nightcrawler.  He was already on the air.  She paused outside the control
room window and watched with interest as he enticed and seduced his
listeners.

LaCroix did not need to look up, he could feel Natalie's presence.  He
started another song, then motioned to her to enter the control room.  He
leaned calmly back in his chair as she tentatively entered.  A smile crept
across his face.  "Good evening Natalie.  Do you mind if I call you Natalie,
afterall, you may be family soon?"

Natalie didn't respond.  "Here is the song and note.  I will live up to my
part of the deal LaCroix, but you must also.  Every night for 30 days you
will play this."

LaCroix nodded as he took the tape from Natalie's hand.  His hand lingered
holding hers as he grasped for the tape.  Natalie panicked and pulled her
hand free.  LaCroix chuckled.  "Agreed.  And if in 30 days he hasn't come
back..."  LaCroix rose out of his chair and pinned Natalie against the wall,
"...you're mine."

Natalie wiggled against his strength.  LaCroix had his entire body length
pressing against her.  He breathed in her sweet scent as his lips gingerly
touched her cheek.  Natalie pushed harder against his chest, "Let me go."

LaCroix laughed into her ear.  "Just a small sample?"

Natalie's eyes met his, "Not in this lifetime buster!"

LaCroix sighed and stepped back.  "I can wait...what is it...30 days?  I
have time."

Natalie hugged against the wall and retreated for the door.  LaCroix watched
her pitiful escape.  "Good night, Natalie."  He turned and returned to his
broadcast.  Natalie grabbed for the door and left the room.  She ran down
the hallway and pressed for the elevator.  Her mind raced.  Thirty days, in
thirty days if Nick had not come back, she would have to...  Her whole body
screamed.

************

Once Natalie was in her car, she switched her radio on.  LaCroix's voice
oozed from the speakers.

"Gentle listeners, let me continue the story we started a couple of weeks
ago. Forbidden Love.  It seems as if the lovely Natalie cannot live without
her knight in shining armor, Nicholas.  She has made a small request, one
that I wish you all to induldge in.  For 30 days, I will read a special
request from her and play a song.  If in 30 days her knight in shining armor
has not returned...she has agreed to move on with her life.  We can only
wonder what her life will be like?  Although I have it on the greatest
authority...she will have the experience of a lifetime and have time to
dwell upon her decision."  LaCroix chuckled softly.

Natalie's head rested back against the seat of her car.  She did not notice
the figure standing around the corner of the builidng.  Nick had followed
Natalie here, but had not gone inside the building.  He was relieved when he
saw her return to the car.  He could hear LaCroix's voice from the car radio
floating through the air towards him.  He watched Natalie as she breathed
heavily.  Whatever her plan was, it had included LaCroix and it pained him
to know he had put her into harms way.  He could not believe his ears.
LaCroix had agreed to 30 days of this?

LaCroix spoke softly as he read her note, "My Nicholas, I am thinking of you
through my restless days and nights.  Our love is eternal and your love is
returned three fold with all my heart.  I've been an empty shell and I can't
envision my life without you by my side.  I'd give everything to have you in
my arms again.  I'm living with your memory, and I can't let you go.  I
imagine looking into your eyes, but when my eyes open, you're not there. I
can't go on without you, living with your memory will not do.  Together, we
are strong enough to face any obsticle.  Please return my love.  Natalie."

LaCroix placed the tape into the machine, "And now our dedication."

<I know that when you look at me,
There's so much that you just don't see.
But if you would only take the time,
I know in my heart you'd find,
Oh, a girl who's scared sometimes,
Who isn't always strong.
Can't you see the hurt in me?
I feel so all alone.

I wanna run to you, oo,
I wanna run to you, oo.
Won't you hold me in your arms
And keep me safe from harm?
I wanna run to you, oo. (I'll run to you, oo)
But if I come to you, oo,
Tell me will you stay,
Or will you run away?>

Nick thought of Natalie's words.  Their love was strong, but how could he
condemn her to this darkness?  He watched Natalie as she sat numbly in the
car.  The moonlight played against her pale features.  He watched her pain
etched face, then his eyes glanced up the building to the offices that held
the CERK station.

<Each day, each day I play the role
Of someone always in control.
But at night, I come home and turn the key,
There's nobody there, no one cares for me.
Oh what's the sense
Of trying hard to find your dreams?
Without someone to share them with
Tell me, what does it mean?

I wanna run to you, oo,
I wanna run to you, oo.
Won't you hold me in your arms
And keep me safe from harm?
I wanna run to you, oo. (I'll run to you, oo)
But if I come to you, oo,
Tell me will you stay,
Or will you run away?>

Natalie let the tears roll down her cheeks.  Was this enough to bring him
back?  She thought of her deal with LaCroix.  If she had to be brought
across, how would Nick react to LaCroix having made love to her?  If Nick
would forgive her for bargaining with LaCroix, the moment he would take her
blood in passion, as she had been told a vampire does, he would know all.
Would he realize her desperation?  This wasn't something she could ever hide
from him.  She began to wonder if she should run away herself.

<Run away,
No, I need you here,
I need you here to wipe away my tears,
To kiss away my fears.
No, if you only know how much...

I wanna run to you, oo,
I wanna run to you, oo.
Won't you hold me in your arms
And keep me safe from harm?
I wanna run to you, oo. (I'll run to you, oo)
But if I come to you, oo,
Tell me will you stay,
Or will you run away?>

As the song ended, Natalie started her car and headed for home.  Nick
continued to watch from the distance.  Natalie should have been thrilled
LaCroix had played her request.  But, only pain seemed to radiate around
her.  He looked up at the light in the Cerk station, perhaps a visit to
LaCroix was in order.

**************

LaCroix anticipated the arrival of his son.  He had already signed off for
the evening when Nicholas had arrived.  Nick slowly walked into the small
broadcasting booth.  The first thing he noticed was the lingering scent of
Natalie's perfume.

"You had a visitor tonight?"  Nick began nonchalantly.

LaCroix sat back in his chair and watched his sons movements.  His hands
made a triangle in front of his face as he leaned against the control panel.
"Yes, a very delightful young lady.  Seems to have misplaced something, or
someone.  She seems to be under the impression I can help her get him back."

Nick eyed LaCroix closely, "You've agreed to this for 30 days?"

LaCroix leaned back again, "Yes, the girl touched my heart.  It only seemed
fitting I help her out."

Nick sneered, "So you can torment me you mean.  I want you to stay away from
her, LaCroix!"

LaCroix wickedly smiled, "Of course Nicholas.  I promise I will not approach
her again."

Nick seemed satisified with LaCroix's response.  He would not go near
Natalie.  "Fine."

LaCroix sighed, "Is there anything else Nicholas?  I do have other things to
worry about besides your love life.  Or lack thereof?"

Nick did not respond to LaCroix's intentional intrusion into his personal
affairs.  "No.  Just remember your promise."  Nick turned and left the room.

LaCroix sat back in his chair, "Oh Nicholas, I *never* forget a promise or a
deal."  LaCroix sat back chuckling to himself.

************
Chapter 14
************

Nick continued to shadow Natalie over the following weeks.  He became more
and more distraught over her actions.  Instead of Natalie moving on with her
life, she seemed to come to a complete stand still.  She was pulling away
from her friends and even her work was beginning to suffer.  Her mood swings
moved on a dime, one moment she maybe laughing at a joke Grace had told her
and the next...be snapping someone's head off for the smallest of errors.

During this period, Nick had spent his time re-accustoming himself to the
ways of the night.  He had sold the loft.  He was amazed when the realtor
told him somebody wanted it as is.  They had even purchased the Caddy.  He
had gone there one night and ended up spending the entire day.  There were a
few small momentos he would not part with.

As he rummaged through the shelves, he came across a photograph book.  As he
sat and stared at the pictures, he remembered the night Natalie had given
him the book.  It was mainly filled with their time together...dinners,
dances, friends, the policeman's picnic.   She had told him once, that she
had never wanted him to forget her.  He turned the page and found an 8x10
photograph of Nat.  His finger gently traced the curve of her bright,
smiling face.  Her smile radiated off the page and haunted him.  "I'll never
forget you."

Nick continued to rummage through his old things.  He glanced at his watch
and turned the radio on.  Once again, for the 28th time, LaCroix played
Natalie's request.  Every night, Nick had turned CERK on.  Natalie's message
continued to mezmorize him, but it was better for her.  She would move on,
she had to.  He wished he could forget what he was, run into Natalie's arms
and scoop her up.  He longed for the day he could love her as she deserved,
but alas, that day would not come.  Nick knew every word of the song by
heart.  He sang along as it's haunting melody plagued his conscience and
visions of *his* Natalie danced across his memory.

************

Natalie's depression continued.  Each night as the song played and her note
was reread, she sat with some small hope that Nick would rush into the room
and pull her into his arms.  Each night came and went like the night before,
no Nick.

Tonight was the 28th night.  By the time the song ended Natalie was in
tears.  She had only two nights left before LaCroix would demand his due.
She couldn't believe Nick was gone.  Why else wouldn't he come to her?  He
must be out of Toronto completely.  The thought that Nick had never even
heard her plea frightened her, but then again, what if he had heard it every
night and still not came to her?

Natalie would be on shift tomorrow night, she had planned for this
eventuality for the past month.  If Nick did not come, LaCroix would bring
her across in two days.  She couldn't stay at the Coronor's office.  She had
been obnoxious all month.  Tomorrow she would find a way to quit or be
fired.  Natalie had also managed to distance herself from most of her
friends.  Schanke and Grace were at their wits end.  Each contributing her
attitude as her reaction to Nick's leaving.  Natalie did have to admit she
did chose her friends well.  They were not willing to give up on her that
easily.

The biggest shock she had during the month was when she drove by the loft
and saw the SOLD sign hanging on the window.  She had tracked the realtor
down and drilled her for information, but the woman was like a priest.  No
information was given on the seller or the buyer.

Natalie sat back on her couch and stared out the window into the night.  She
wondered where Nick was and what he was doing?  But more importantly, who
was he with?  Had he already forgotten her?  Had he already found another to
take her place?  Natalie rose from the couch and went to her bedroom.  She
needed her rest, for tomorrow night she was to give the performance of her
life.  She would hurt the last two people she held most dear and walk away
from this life...forever.

**************

LaCroix sat back and grinned evilly.  As the song continued playing he could
only dream of the vision he would hold only two short nights from now.
LaCroix could remember the scent of her perfume, the racing of her heart
beat as he held her close.  He closed his eyes and could almost see her
face, as she would surrender to him.

LaCroix looked down at the bill of sale he held in his hand.  The irony, he
now owned Nick's loft.  After he brought Natalie across, he would move her
there.  Even Natalie had not realized she would not be able to leave LaCroix
as soon as she hoped.  As a new fledgling, she would require his guidance.
She would need time to accustom herself to her new vampire senses.
Obtaining Nick's loft seemed the perfect way to remind her of why she was
dependent upon him.  Perhaps even make her begin to despise his son for
putting her into this situation.

If all went his way, Natalie would become his...body and soul.

Chapter 15
**************

Grace walked into the morgue, once again Natalie had CERK tuned into the
radio.  Grace stood silently back and shook her head, she had to ask.  "Nat,
what is it with you and this station lately?"

Nat raised her head up from the autopsy she was performing and huffed, "He's
an acquired taste, it grows on you."

Grace shook her head, "I'm not so sure.  Sounds weird to me."

Natalie took her hand and pinched the bridge of her nose.  "Grace will you
hand me that...um..."  she waved her hand in the air towards the tray
holding her instruments.

Grace looked in the general direction Natalie was pointing towards.  "You
mean this?"  Nat nodded her head. Grace giggled, "It's called a rib
spreader."

Nat ran her hand across her forehead.  "Is it hot in here?"

Grace looked at the thermometer on the wall, "Nope, 68 degrees like always.
Why?"

Natalie gritted her teeth beneath her mask.  It was now or never.  As she
continued the autopsy, Dr. Greene, the head Coroner, walked into Natalie's
lab.  He nodded to Grace whose smile instantly left her face.  You didn't
see the big man unless something was up.  Natalie continued to fight with
the instrument in her hands, when she felt a light tapping on her shoulder.
"Dr. Lambert."

Nat turned her head, she froze when she saw the man standing before her.
"Dr. Lambert, may I speak to you in private?"

Natalie pulled the instruments from the body and put them on the tray.  She
noticed Grace making a hasty retreat out of the back of the room.  Natalie
pulled the mask from her face and walked over and sat down in her chair,
"Yes Dr. Greene, how can I help you?"

The man walked over beside Natalie's desk and sat in the opposite chair.
Neither of them noticed the figure hugging her ear to the door, or the other
outside the building peering through the window.

"Dr. Lambert, I really hate to do this, but...", he repositioned himself in
his chair and handed Natalie a paper.  "This is an official warning.  You've
been distracted in your work lately.  Some mistakes have been made...quite
honestly...you've been careless.  A first year grad student could catch the
mistakes that have gone past you."

Natalie looked to the body on her table.  She thanked her lucky stars she
would not have to go through with her original plan for getting herself
fired.  Natalie read the paper in front of her and laid it down on the desk.
She calmly raised from her chair and pulled her purse from her desk drawer.
"I'm sorry Dr. Greene.  I cannot and will not work under this pressure.  I
resign."

Dr. Greene rose to his feet.  "Dr. Lambert.  I wasn't asking for your
resignation, only that you slow down and be more careful.  No one wants your
resignation.  I know things have been....difficult lately."

Natalie stood before the neatly dressed man, who obviously had not done
field work in years, "Dr. Greene my personal life is of no concern of yours.
I would never let it get in the way of my duties.  If you would hire a few
more people around here perhaps things could be done properly.  As it is, I
already put in 12 hour nights.  I'm tired and overworked.  Right now I want
to go home."  Natalie pushed past the man towards the lab doors.

Dr. Greene followed Natalie towards the doors.  "Dr. Lambert, please.  You
know our funding situation.  We can't afford to hire more people.  Won't you
please...just reconsider?"

Grace gasped, she couldn't believe her ears.  She pulled herself away from
the door and walked aimlessly down the hall.  She should call somebody...she
wasn't sure who, but somebody.  She had always gone to Nat when she had a
problem, but who did she go to when Nat was in trouble?  Nick?  She scolded
herself.  "He's probably what started this whole mess to begin with."  Grace
continued cursing softly beneath her breath as she went down the hall.

Natalie turned once more towards Dr. Greene, "I've already given you my
answer.  I quit!"  Natalie turned and bolted out the lab doors.

*********

Nick nearly came through the glass.  This was not happening.  He couldn't
believe his ears.  Natalie resigning?  He floated back away from the glass.
He wanted to hit something or someone...anything...preferably Dr. Greene.
His attentions were refocused when he heard the slamming of the door to the
building.  Natalie came rushing out and ran to her car.  Nick watched as she
started the car and peeled out of the parking lot nearly side swiping two
other vehicles on her way out.  He took flight immediately, she was going
way to fast for her own good.

Nick soared overhead as close to Natalie's car as he dared.  She was weaving
in and out of traffic very haphazardly.  He nearly froze when she barely
missed going head on into an oncoming truck.

Natalie drove with her tears streaming down her cheeks.  In one month, she
had lost Nick, quit her job, and made a deal with the devil.  The thought of
giving herself to LaCroix tomorrow night was driving her insane.  When she
had made the bargain, she was positive Nick would come to her rescue, that
things would never get this far out of hand.  But as time marched on, the
possibility of having to give herself to LaCroix gnawed away at her insides.
His hands and lips touching her as she had only dreamed Nick's would some
day.  Natalie suddenly felt very cheap.  The whole thing now seemed
demeaning to her.  She had traded her body and a one-night stand for
immortality, for the chance to win Nick back.  But why would he want her
after giving herself freely to LaCroix.  But then again, what guarantee was
there LaCroix would bring her across.  She had always been under the
impression he despised her.  Perhaps he was only toying with her emotions
with the promise of bringing her across.  Natalie sighed deeply, "Die
tonight or tomorrow what's the difference?"

Her foot hit the accelorator as she exited the freeway for the last road out
of town.  Once she was past the last of the city barriers, she only had one
destination in mind.

Nick flew like a demon to keep up.  Natalie's speed was increasing with each
passing second once she had left the city.  Nick scanned the road up ahead
of her.  There was a dangerous curve coming, with a deep ravine off to one
side.  He was worried as he watched her car weave off the side of the road a
few times, if she would be able to slow down in time.

Natalie knew this road, she knew the curve.  As she fastly approached the
curve, her heart raced.  She had made a mistake, the deal with LaCroix would
not bring Nick back and she had condemned herself to an eternity...an
eternity Nick loathed.  An eternity in darkness...no Nick.  How could he
accept her, throwing her own mortality away...begging the one person Nick
hated even more than his own existence to do the deed of bringing her
across?

As the curve approached Natalie's heart beat wildly in her chest.  She began
to accelerate then with a sudden reaction she hit her brakes.  Her car
skidded and slid to a rest just inches from going over the ravine.  She
hugged her steering wheel for dear life.  Her head rose and she looked out
over the hood of her car into the ravine where her headlights were now
pointed.  Natalie laid her head against the steering wheel with her tears
still falling.  She couldn't.  She would not take her own life.  She sat
there several minutes letting her tears fall.  Finally, she put the car into
reverse and drove back into the city.  She would accept her fate
tomorrow...whatever that fate was.  With or without Nick...she would go on.

Nick stood beside the road and looked down into the ravine.  How could he
have done this to her?  The tears streaked down his cheeks.  She had
contemplated taking her own life tonight.  His heart had beat in succession
when he had realized her plan.  When he heard the brakes engage he found
himself praying for enough road for the car to stop.  Nick shook his head.
He had to find a way.  Somehow he had to help Nat move on with her life.  He
reached down and picked up a small pebble off the road.  He threw it into
the darkened ravine.  There had to be a way.  Things were not as bleak as
she was imagining them to be.

Chapter 16
***************

The song ended for the 30th time.  Natalie stood at her window and searched
the night sky, but as before...nothing.  She turned and looked at her
apartment.  Everything had been boxed and put into storage.  She had given
Sydney to a family down the street, she figured she couldn't take him where
she was going.  She walked slowly around the bare room.  The few things she
had left...well they didn't matter.  She had already given the apartment key
to the manager, once she walked out the door...this life would be over.  She
sighed heavily and opened the door; she looked back once more at the window
showing the night sky.  She thought she saw a movement and her heart lept,
but she quickly dismissed it.  "It was the wind Lambert...only the wind."
She closed the door and left.

Nick clung to the wall.  Had she seen him?  He reached out for her familiar
heart beat, but none was there.  He slowly floated to her window, then
noticed the bare apartment.  Every stick of furniture, picture, pillow, and
book was gone.  Was she moving?  It was an odd time of night to be leaving?
He looked down into the street and saw her getting into her car.  He decided
to follow.

************

Natalie drove slowly towards the Raven.  She wasn't sure if this was where
she was suppose to go, LaCroix had never given her any direction on this.
She pulled the car into the back lot and got out and locked it.  She
gathered all her strength together and walked towards the Raven's door.
Before she could reach for the handle, a man opened the door and threw
another man into the street.  Surprised, Natalie took two steps back.  She
heard the husky voice bellow into the street, "And stay out!"  Natalie's
hand rose to her lips as the burly man examined her.  A sly smile crossed
the mans lips, "This way Dr. Lambert."

Natalie was stunned when she heard her name.  The man motioned for her to
enter the club.  Obviously, LaCroix had already made certain arrangements.
Natalie brushed past the man and halted.  He closed the door and walked by
her and escorted her into the bowels of the club.  He lead her to the back
of the room and opened a door.  "Go down this hallway, turn right at the
end.  It's the last door on the left.  He's expecting you."

******

Nick couldn't believe his eyes.  Nat going into the Raven?  He waited only a
few moments, then followed them inside.  Once inside, he soon found himself
embraced in Janette's arms. "Nichola how nice to see you again.  I've missed
you."  Before Nick knew what had hit him, he found himself drawn into a long
passionate kiss.  Once Janette knew Natalie would be hidden from Nick's
vision, she released him.  She attempted to beguile Nick with her sweet
words, "Now *that* is what I call a kiss."

Nick strained his neck trying to look past Janette's shoulder.  Janette took
her hand and captured his chin.  "Nichola, you don't seem happy to see me?"

********

Natalie slowly walked down the darkened corridor.  In the distance she could
hear the faint rhythms of music.  Once she arrived at the door, she noticed
the music emmanated from this very room.  She also recognized the tune.  It
was the song she had had LaCroix play for the past 30 days as her dedication
to Nick.  She took a deep breath, then knocked softly.

LaCroix knew he didn't have much time, he could already sense the presence
of his wayward son in the club.  If Janette followed her instructions, he
would have just enough time to bring Natalie across.  LaCroix hastily went
over and opened the door. He smiled pleasantly and motioned for Natalie to
enter the room.  "Please enter, Natalie."

Natalie entered the quaint abode and stood quietly beside a black leather
chair.  She turned to speak to LaCroix, but found herself face to face with
the Master Vampire.  Without a word, LaCroix pulled Natalie close as his
hands wrapped around her waist.  Natalie gasped as she pushed back against
his chest, "Wait."

LaCroix sneered as his eyes turned amber and his fangs descended, "But why,
Natalie?  I've done as you requested.  I have listened to your pathetic cry
for 30 nights for a man who obviously had better things to do.  Now, as I
promised, I will show you how a real man can pleasure you."

LaCroix began backing Natalie towards the bed.  His body was pressed full
length against hers.  Natalie's lips quivered, "What's the rush?  Why don't
we sit and talk a while?"  Natalie found herself pinned against the side of
the bed.

LaCroix laughed, "In a few moments you will have forever for talk.  But for
now..."  LaCroix's hands trailed up Natalie's sides.  He gently ran his
hands across her breasts and pushed her shoulders back onto the bed.

Natalie began breathing heavily.  She brought her hands up and once again
pushed against LaCroix's chest.  "Please?"

LaCroix lowered his head into her auburn curls and chuckled into her ear.
"As you wish, my dear, I will *please* myself."  LaCroix began nuzzling
Natalie's neck as his hands went down and trailed beneath her blouse.

Natalie could feel his cool fingertips against her warm skin.  He trailed
his hands along her ribcage.  Caressing the smooth ivory skin of her
porcelain body.  His hands continued moving up her bare abdomen until he
cupped her full breasts into his hands.  The next sound she heard was the
buttons of her blouse as they flew across the room.  Subserviant, Natalie
closed her eyes and began to weep silently.

*******

As Janette laced her hands around Nick's neck, he was rapidly losing his
patience with her.  This time he grabbed and forcibly held her wrists to her
sides.  "Where is she Janette?  You're stalling, I can always tell."

Janette looked up into his face, "Who Nichola?"

Nick snarled his response, "You know perfectly well WHO!  Where's Natalie?"

Janette wrinkled her nose and huffed, "It was her choice Nichola.  She came
to him willingly."

Nick took a step back and blankly stared Janette in the face, "What?!"

"Your Natalie.  She made a deal with LaCroix."  Janette smiled coyly.  "She
lost."

Nick grabbed Janette roughly by the shoulders, "What could she possily have
to deal with, Janette?"

Janette straightened herself and looked Nick squarely in the face, "Her
soul."

Nick screamed out in terror, "No!!!!"

Janette continued to torment Nick, "It's all *your* fault Nichola.  All you
had to do was love her, return to her...and she would have been free.  Now
she will be LaCroix's...body and soul."

Nick's body began to shake with rage.  He understood Janettes words
perfectly.  "Where are they Janette?"  His eyes flared red.

Janette disentangled herself from Nick's embrace.  She turned and looked
toward the door and pointed.  Her words spat from her mouth, "There.  But
you're too late."

Without a moments hesitation, Nick bolted for the door.

Chapter 17
*************

LaCroix had wasted no time in accustoming himself to Natalie's body.
Natalie let out a scream as she felt LaCroix's fangs scrap against her
breast.  As the first droplets of her blood touched his lips he was lost in
the ecstacy of her life force.  Natalie's hands flew towards his chest, only
to be caught and pinned to her side.  He continued licking his way towards
Natalie's throat until he had brought himself up and was now lying full
length on top of her.  She could feel his stiffened manhood against her
thigh through the material of his pants.  LaCroix released one of Natalie's
hands and brought his hand up and turned Natalie's eyes to meet his.
Through her tears, she watched as his fangs descended towards her neck.

********

Nick ran down the corridor.  He could hear the words of Natalie's song to
him being played in the background.  He reached out with his senses and
honed in on her familiar, but rapidly racing heart beat.

Once he reached the wooden door he heard her scream, he grabbed hold of the
handle and crashed through with all his vampiric strength.  As he rose from
the floor, he saw LaCroix's fangs entering the pliant flesh of Natalie's
neck.

Nick rose to his feet and flew across the room.  He grabbed LaCroix by the
throat and pulled his fangs from Natalie.  In one thrust, he propelled
LaCroix across the room and sent him smashing into a table and chairs.

Nick reached down and pulled Natalie's limp body into his arms.  He checked
the area of LaCroix's mark.  Nick knew LaCroix had not been able to take
enough of her blood to bring her across yet.  As he sat holding Natlie in
his arms, he suddenly felt a searing pain to the back of his head.  Nick
dropped Natalie to the bed as he fell semi-conscious to the floor.

LaCroix towered over his son. "You will NOT interfere.  She has already made
her choice and you WILL abide by it."

Nick picked himself up off the floor and rubbed at the back of his neck.  He
looked at LaCroix leering over at him and spat, "You will not take her,
LaCroix.  She is mine."

LaCroix sat on the edge of the bed and rubbed his hand against Natalie's
forehead, then laughed, "Yours?  You have a funny way of showing it
Nicholas.  You leave this poor creature pining away for you.  And if I know
you...and I do Nicholas, you were never far away.  You knew how much she
cared, but yet you never made yourself known to her.  You would rather watch
her suffer."

LaCroix looked away and then down at Nicholas, "It seems to me, *we* have
had this same conversation before."

Nick walked over and looked down at LaCroix caressing Natalie's cheek.  He
could barely contain his feelings as he noticed the blood and condition of
Natalie's clothing.  Her blood's aroma assaulted his nostrils as he noticed
the pale skin of her partially exposed breast.  He shook himself mentally
and redirected his attentions to LaCroix.   "The agreement is no longer
valid LaCroix.  You made a deal with Natalie.  What was it?"

LaCroix rose and faced his son.  "I played this ridiculous *song* for 30
days.  In that time, you had to come back and consumate your love for her.
If you did not return, I would take her."  The sentual smile returned to
LaCroix's face, "Afterwards, she would completely surrender herself to me
for one night."

Nick looked down at Natalie, his emotions and cravings teetering on the
edge.  He sat down on the edge of the bed and pulled a sheet snuggly around
her.  He  reached around and gathered her into his arms.  She stirred
slightly.  Her eyes fluttered open and she began to focus.  The first thing
she noticed was his familiar cologne.  She raised her hand to his face and
gently caressed the outline of his jawline.  As her eyes focused in on his
features, "Nick?"

"Shhh...I'm here Nat."  He kissed her gently on the temple.

LaCroix watched the scene before him.  His own blood boiled for more of the
delightful fruit he had just partaken of.  He wiped his hand across his lips
and watched the couple.  He stood by patiently...he had time.

Natalie's hand reached for Nick's lapel.  She lifted her head until her lips
were a whispers breath from his, then gently brushed their lips together.
Nick responded putting his hand around her and pulling her into him
deepening the kiss.  When he released her, Natalie stared up into Nick's
blue eyes.  A smile crept across her lips.  "Where have you been?"

Nick smiled and ran his hands through her auburn curls. "Not far."

Natalie stared into Nick's face, then she noticed LaCroix lingering behind
him.  Her hand went to her neck and she felt the fresh blood there.  She
gasped, "Nick!  I'm a...."

Nick quickly calmed her fears as his hands caressed her cheeks, "No Nat.
You're not a vampire."  He turned and looked contemnly at LaCroix.  "Not
yet."

With a willful reply LaCroix smirked, "Ah, but she soon will be."

Nick looked into Natalie's face.  Her hand was rubbing against his arm and
he felt it catch on his watch.  He pulled her tattered clothing free from
the watch, then stared.  A smile spread across his face and he looked
triumphantly at LaCroix.  "Her time isn't up, LaCroix."

LaCroix questioned, "What do you mean her time isn't up?  I've played the
song for 30 days.  It's over."

Nick shook his head.  "It's still two hours 'til midnight.  It's still the
30th day."

LaCroix looked dumbfoundedly at Nick.   "That's not the agreement."

Natalie looked hopefully into Nick's eyes.  Her hand rested upon his chest
as she spoke, "The agreement *was* for 30 days Nick."

LaCroix became enraged.  "No!  I have lived up to my part of the bargain!
She will be mine!"

Nick pulled Natalie protectively into his embrace.  "It's over, LaCroix."

LaCroix towered over the couple then stepped back.  He looked at Nick and
Natalie staring into each other's eyes.  He eased back as an evil grin
crossed his face again, "The deal is still not complete Nicholas."

Nick looked at LaCroix, "What do you mean *not complete.*  I'm here, and I'm
taking Natalie out of here."

LaCroix took a step towards them, "That was only *part* of the deal.  You
have yet to consummate your so called *love*.  Are you willing to trust
yourself with her life Nicholas?"  LaCroix bent over until he was talking
directly into Nick's ear and whispered, "Remember Alyssa?"

Nick's sadden eyes looked longingly into Natalie's bewildered ones.  Her
hand came up and cupped his chin, "Nick?"  Her eyes searched his.
Desperation laced her voice, "Nick, what's wrong?"

Nick shook his head and pulled his chin from Natalie's hand.  His eyes
averted to the ground as he spoke, "Nat,...I wouldn't be able to control
it."  He looked painfully into her eyes. "Do you understand?  I wouldn't be
able to stop."

Natalie looked angrily at LaCroix, then she focused again on Nick.  Her
hands cupped his face, "Nick, you can control it.  LaCroix told me so.  You
*can* love a mortal."

He sighed heavily and kissed her palm.  "Nat,... I can't...."

Natalie's anger grew as she raised her voice, her hands left his face and
she pointed towards the broken door, "Fine then, just leave.  LaCroix can
have his way with me, then I guess you can have what's left over."

LaCroix stood back watching the scene before him, at the mention of his name
he laughed, "Yes Nicholas.  I would be happy to deposit her on your doorstep
when I am finished with her."

LaCroix's words cut through Nick like a double-edged sword.  He turned to
Natalie.  "Nat, I won't let him."

Natalie pleaded with her eyes.  She leaned close to Nick and rested her
forehead against his cheek.  She whispered, "Love me Nick."  She raised her
head and their cheeks brushed together.

Nick closed his eyes savoring the intimate touch.  He wrapped his arms
around her and cocooned her with his body.  He buried his face in to her
auburn curls and gently kissed her hair.  Natalie melted into his powerful
embrace.  She spoke softly into his chest, "Please, Nick,...try.  I would
rather die in your arms, than..."

Nick fought back his own tears, as he raised his hand and brushed hers away.
He nodded his head and spoke softly against her hair, "As you wish, Nat."

Nick rose from the bed cradling Natalie in his arms.  She snuggled closely
to his chest as her head rested against his shoulder.  He began to walk
towards the door, but found himself blocked by LaCroix.  LaCroix watched his
prize being held in Nick's arms.  He spoke hastily, "Nicholas, give her to
me.  You *can't* control yourself.  You *will* lose her."

Nick looked into Natalie's eyes as she smiled up at him.  He then looked
directly into LaCroix's, "If I lose her, then you've lost us both."  He
brushed past LaCroix and headed for the loft.

*************
Chapter 18
*************

Nick glided safely through the open skylight and landed softly near the
covered black leather couch.  Once his feet had touched ground, he sat
Natalie down beside him, clinging her body closely to his.  He stood holding
her silently for several moments.

Natalie closed her eyes and savored the coolness of Nick's arms calming her
fears.  She worked her arms free from the sheet and rested them gently
against his chest.  She looked up and found his clear blue eyes staring
calmly down at her.  She smiled and took one hand and rested it softly
against his cheek.  Nick closed his eyes and rubbed gently against the
warmth of her palm.

Her trust in him was unnerving.  He turned his head and kissed ever so
gently into her palm.  He raised his hand and captured her hand in his.  His
fingers entwined with hers as he looked solmnly into her eyes.  "Nat, I...."
He took a deep breath as the unshed tears sparkled in his eyes.

Nat watched as worry and doubt clouded his eyes and began to consume him.
She released his hand and rose up and captured his lips with hers.  Nick
gradually responded as Nat gently kissed and moaned into his mouth, "I love
you Nick.  We *can* do this.  I trust you."

Nick's hand ran down Natalie's jawline, then trailed to her throat.  He
stopped suddenly when he felt the marks from LaCroix's earlier attempt to
bring her across.  He pulled back suddenly and stared.  His fingers gently
traced the holes that had been left.  Again his pain filled eyes looked at
her, "Nat, what if I can't stop?  What if?"  He felt her finger gently fall
across his lips.

Natalie looked intently into his eyes, then replaced her finger with her
eager lips.  She pushed herself forcefully against Nick sending them
tumbling backward onto the couch.  Her hands quickly began to work the
buttons of his shirt as his hands worked to capture hers.  Between her
kisses he was calling her name, "Nat" "Nat" "Nat!"

She slowed her advances when she found both of her wrists had been captured.
Perplexed, Nick looked into her eyes.  Natalie's fears took hold.  With a
deep cleansing breath she spoke slowly, "Nick, I *need* to be with you.
When you left, my world ended.  I didn't care whether I lived or died."

Nick whispered, "The car."

Natalie stared blankly into his face, "You know about the car?"

Nick nodded.

Her tears slowly escaped from her eyes, "I was scared.  The thought of
LaCroix touching me.  I panicked.  I knew you would come back and when you
didn't...I'm incomplete without you Nick."

Nick pulled her close, "I know the feeling.  You weren't alone Nat.  I felt
every pain you went through.  I just kept hoping you would find a way to
move on without me.  I didn't know about LaCroix until tonight."

Natalie pushed herself up off of Nick's chest and sat up on the couch.  Nick
straightened up himself and sat beside her.  He reached over and pulled her
hands into his.

Natalie looked at his hands holding hers, then looked into his face, "I
thought I could handle LaCroix.  I guess I should have taken your advise and
avoided him.  But I was desperate, Nick, I couldn't believe you left me?
Not even a good bye."

Nick sighed, "I thought it would be easier."  He looked at her hands and
held them tighter, "I was wrong.  I was a coward, if I faced you I knew I
wouldn't be able to leave."  His hand went up and turned her chin towards
him, "I *do* love you, Natalie.  I just didn't want you to give up the kind
of future you deserved...a husband and a family."

Natalie leaned into his hand, "Nick, my future is with you.  I can't imagine
either of those...without you.  We will continue to look for the cure, Nick.
Whether we find it tomorrow or a hundred years from now...I won't give up on
*our* dream."

***********
Chapter 19
***********

Nick leaned forward and held her chin suspended for the feather light kisses
he trailed from her lips to her neck.  As his lips went across the wounds,
he slowed his movements and gently sucked the oozing blood into his mouth.
His hands flew up and held her shoulders as the intoxicating blood trailed
down into his throat.   He was only beginning to feel the depth of her
emotions for him as he began to war with his beast for control.  His fangs
ached to drop and devour the passion that intoxicated his senses.

Natalie gasped as Nick continued kissing and nuzzling her neck.  Her hands
went around and trailed up his back until her fingertips became entangled
into his blond curls.  With her hands cupped behind his head, she encouraged
him by pulling him closer and harder into her body.  Her breathing resounded
like drums as she breathed heavily into his ear.

Nick's hands trailed down her shoulders and across the front of her chest
until they came to rest upon her ample bosom.  He slowly began to knead the
hardening nubs between his thumbs and forefingers as Natalie moaned in
response.

In one fell swoop, Nick released her and picked her up and flew her up the
staircase.  The next sensation Natalie felt was Nick laying himself fully on
top of her on the bed.  His hands traveled down the sides of her body,
slowly peeling her clothing as they went.  Before long Natalie lay fully
exposed to Nick's enchanted eyes.  His hands studied every subtle curve of
her body.

Natalie reached up and continued to release the rest of his shirt buttons.
As her hands neared his belt, she reached further and cupped his stiffening
manhood in her hands through his increasingly tight jeans.  Nick reared his
head back as a low growl escaped from deep within.  As his eyes found
Natalie's, she could see the signs of the vampire as the gold flecks flared
in his eyes.

Natalie hesitated briefly at the sight of the beast.  She brought her hand
up and gently caressed his cheek.  After a moment, she continued to work on
the button and zipper to Nick's jeans.  She pushed his jeans as far down as
she could reach.  When she could go no further, Nick assisted.  His clothing
and shoes joined hers crumpled on the floor.

Natalie reached up and rubbed her hands against Nick's chest.  As Nick lost
himself in the sensation, Natalie made her move.  She pushed up and over
hard.  Before Nick knew what had hit him, Natalie sat stradled atop him
leering hungrily into his eyes.  Nick pushed his head back into the pillow
as her hands continued rubbing up and down his chest.  Her nails scraping
lightly cross his nipples as she leered.  She could feel his throbbing
manhood against her cheeks.  She wiggled evilly enticing his shaft to throb
helplessly beneath her.  Nick moaned out in ecstacy, "Nat."

Natalie leaned over and began kissing up his chest.  She paid special
attention to each of his nipples and continued up his throat until she
captured his mouth with hers.  Her tongue demanded entrance as his lips
eagerly parted to accept her.  As their tongues dueled Natalie could feel
the descending fangs.  She playfully wrapped her tongue around one,
eliciting a roar from Nick.

As Nick felt the erotic pleasure of Natalie's tongue against his sensitive
fang, he shot straight up in the bed.  He grabbed Natalie and continued to
grind away into her mouth.  His hands trailed down and caressed the
stiffened nubs of her breasts.  As he released her mouth, his mouth replaced
his hands as he sucked gently drawing her breast into his mouth.  Natalie
arched her back giving Nick full access.  His hands cupped around and lifted
her cheeks.  Nick rhythmically began to move Natalie against his thickened
staff.

As Natalie continued the movements on her own, Nick's hands trailed up her
back and settled into the small of her back.  His tongue continued to
torture her chest as he licked circles slowly up and down her abdomin.  As
Natalie rocked gently against him, Nick's shaft slowly parted her labia.
Natalie shivered as the unintentional contact of Nick's shaft rubbed against
her clit.  Natalie shuddered as the first wave of pleasure hit her body.

Nick smiled as Natalie collapsed into his embrace.  He captured her in his
arms, then pushed her backwards onto the bed.  He parted her legs with his
knee and positioned himself above her to penetrate.  He leaned down and
captured her lips with his.  As their mouths ground together, he once again
parted her labia with his shaft and rocked against her clit.  Natalie
screamed his name as the sensations sent her teetering on the edge.  She
wrapped her arms around Nick and rocked her hips against him.  Each thrust
causing her to dig her nails deeper into Nick's back.

Natalie could feel the molten sensations building deep within her.  She
panted Nick's name begging for release.  On his next thrust, she wrapped her
arms madly around him as his shaft penetrated deep into her core.  As Nick
slowly withdrew, he again pounded hard against her.  He continued thrusting
with her body following his towards the pinnacle of their release.

Nick closed his eyes as he concentrated on Natalie's pleasure.  He growled
in frustration as he felt the full rage of the beast demanding its portion
of his lover.  As the panic gripped his heart, he opened his feral eyes and
stared down into Natalie's angelic face.

Natalie startled as she saw the full emergence of the vampire. Without fear
she raised her hands to his face and pulled his lips to hers.  She kissed
him with abandoned passion.  Scraping her tongue against his fangs, she
released blood droplets into his mouth.  As the blood trailed down his
throat, Nick reared his head back away from her.  He looked down as Natalie
turned her neck to give him full access to her throat.  As Nick slowly
descended, Natalie whispered, "I love you Nick."

With her words ringing in his ears, his fangs entered the softness of her
throat.  He drank in her life essence.  As her blood entered his mouth, he
could feel her orgasm crash against his body.  His final thrust found his
release deep within her core.  As each of them rode the waves of pleasure,
her words echoed through his mind...'I love you Nick'.  Her courage gave him
the strength to release her after only a few swallows.

Nick lay with his head against Natalie's rising chest.  He was elated as he
also heard her steady heart beating beneath him.  He raised his head and saw
her blue eyes shining back at him.  He smiled when she took her hand and
gently ran it through his hair.  He chuckled as she ran her hand beneath his
chin gently tickling the sensitive skin.  He grabbed her fingertips and
gently kissed them.

From out in the street, Nick could hear the church bells ringing...it was
midnight.  As they lay in the bed and listened to the bells, Nick pulled
Natalie snuggly into his embrace.  As the bells echoed, neither spoke.  They
knew the future was uncertain.  Whether Natalie would come across?  They
didn't know. Possibly Nick would become mortal?  Who could tell.  All that
mattered was now was this instant.  Whatever the future would bring, they
would face it together.  As he continued to stroke her hair, Natalie curled
into Nick's embrace for a peaceful night's rest.

*********

A solitary figure drifted slowly away from the window.  He had felt every
sweet caress and sentiment through his link with his son and an ever so
slight vibration through his attempted addition.  Nicholas made sure LaCroix
knew exactly how and when the deal had been fulfilled.  LaCroix's blood
boiled with desire and jealousy.  He craved the sweet nectar he had partaken
of earlier.  LaCroix closed his amber eyes and growled silently as he flew
off into the night.

The End...
