"The Cold Light of Day"
by S. Clark
Nick snuggled up against Natalie and kissed her cheek. "Would you like me to order room service?"
"Sounds heavenly," she said through a yawn. "Belgian waffles?"
"Strawberries or blueberries?"
"Whatever's available." She rolled into a sitting position. "I'm going to take a shower."
Nick smiled and made the phone call. Then he grabbed a bottle from the mini-fridge and trotted into the bathroom. "We've got twenty minutes," he said, climbing into the shower. "What do you think?"
"I don't want to think." She let her eyes roam over his naked body.
Nick's eyes went to gold, another indication of his state of arousal. "I'll think at little," he replied, trying to make her aware of his ability to keep himself in control, to keep her safe.
"I know," she whispered as she moved to his mouth. Her tongue traced his lips. He was reluctant to open his mouth because of his fangs. With her insistence, he opened his lips to allow her access.
Her tongue, her hands, the sounds she was making were all driving Nick closer to the edge.
He placed his hands under her buttocks and lifted her off the ground. Natalie put her legs around his hips, and positioned herself to where he could enter her awaiting moistness.
"Now, Nick," she said, voice pleading. "I need you."
Nick braced her against the wall, and slowly entered her. He pulled back his hips and began to thrust, taking care not to be too forceful. He didn't want to hurt her.Natalie's moans were edging him closer. She called out his name, he knew she was close, also.
Nick moved a hand down to her clit. It wasn't long before he felt her grow tense, then shudder as the orgasm took her.
"Nick," she moaned into his ear. "Please."
He clenched his teeth together in an effort not to bite her. The bottle of blood was outside of the shower, still, and wasn't within arm's reach. "The blood," he said, voice strained.
Natalie shifted, positioning her throat near his mouth.
"No," he whispered.
"I trust you."
Nick could smell the blood coursing just below her flushed skin. It teased him with its sweetness. When he knew he could take no more, he allowed his fangs to pierce through his wrist.
With the first taste of his blood in his mouth, Nick came. He was still for what felt like an eternity, Natalie's pulse echoing in his head.
He then looked to her, his eyes back to their boyish blue. "I think we made it in plenty of time."
She kissed him, deeply. "I do trust you, you know."
Nick stepped out of the shower, still holding her against him. "More than I trust myself." He kissed her again. "Grab some towels."
She grabbed two towels as they passed the rack.
"But I didn't finish my shower," she said with a pout.
"Later, I'll wash your back." He dumped her on the bed. "I promise."
"How many more minutes do we have?" she asked, kneeling on the bed. She grabbed one of his hands and attempted to pull him closer.
"Never enough," he responded, giving her hand a kiss.
He pulled his hand away and started to pull on some clothes he'd brought with him. He tossed a pair of sweats and a t-shirt at Natalie. "They're clean," he said. "I'm sorry we didn't think to pick something up for you."
"No problem," she replied. "I'll go out in a bit and pick up a few things. I don't think we can play hooky for more than a day or so, anyway."
Nick turned to face her. Even in the sweats he found her so appealing, so desirable. He rushed back into the bathroom and grabbed the bottle he'd left there, downing it in a few gulps.
There was a knock at the door. Natalie looked through the peephole and saw the room service attendant. She opened the door so he could bring the cart in.
The young man pulled a badge out from under his jacket. "Police," he announced, entering the room. "This is a raid."
Natalie's face reflected her disbelief. "What? You must have the wrong room."
"Put your hands behind your head," the man ordered. Natalie complied. He motioned, and two uniformed officers came into the room. "Is there anyone else here?"
Nick came walking out from the bathroom, hands already placed behind his head. "This must be some kind of mistake," he said. "I'm a detective with Toronto Metro Homicide."
"Sure you are," one of the uniformed officers said. "Just take a seat on the bed."
"What's this about?" Natalie asked. She was seated next to Nick. He could hear her heart pounding with anxiety.
"My badge is in my coat over there, breast pocket," Nick offered.
The detective reached in and found the badge. "Well, what do you know. I guess this was a mistake after all."
Natalie rolled her eyes. "Of course it was a mistake."
The man motioned to the uniformed officers. "I guess you guys can clear out. And thanks."
They quickly left the room. The detective followed closely, but turned just before he reached the doorway. "By the way, Detective Vetter sends her regards." He gave them a wink and was gone.
Natalie looked stunned, then looked to Nick, who looked equally stunned. "How'd she find us so fast?" he wondered aloud.
Natalie laughed. "I suppose we deserved that."
Nick leaned forward and kissed her. "I know what you deserve."
"Hmmm?" asked Natalie. She wrapped her arms around his neck, drawing him closer.
Nick slipped out of her grasp and into a kneeling position on the floor. He clutched her hands within his. "Marry me."
Natalie's face showed her shock. "Nick, don't tease me like this."
"I'm not teasing. I promise." His eyes shown with happiness. "I was so afraid of what it might be like for us, together. Knowing we've conquered that, I figure we should have a good excuse for this emergency leave."
"Only to cover our tracks?"
"Of course not only for that reason." Nick kissed the back of her hands. "Because I love you, and hope you can find it in yourself to feel the same for me."
Sadness came to Natalie's eyes. "And what happens when it's time to move on?"
"We'll figure out things as we must, if we don't have a cure." He rubbed his cheek against her hand. "But I don't plan to leave you, if that's what you mean."
Her tears began to flow freely.
"Have I made you that sad?" he asked, wiping one away with his thumb.
"This happy," she said, correcting him. "Truly, truly happy."
"So it's yes, then?"
"Yes." The word came out on a breath, barely spoken. She leaned forward and kissed him. "Yes," she repeated. "Yes."
Just then a knock sounded at the door. Nick looked at Nat. "I'll get it." He gave her hands another kiss before letting them go.
"Who is it?" Nick asked.
"Room service," came the reply.
Nick looked to Nat and she shrugged. He turned back towards the door. "Got some ID?"
