"A Special Night"
by S. Clark

Nat lowered the rear view mirror to the point where she could check her makeup one last time.  She didn't like to consider herself a vain person, but Nick had indicated he'd make tonight a special night.  She thought the least she could do was dress for the occasion.

In the lift she straightened her dress, brushing a few stray specks from the black velvet.  Even if it hadn't been cold she knew she'd still be wearing a wrap.  The dress's low cut cleavage was bringing drafts to unexpected places.

The lift ground to a start.  Nat took a deep breath, mustering her courage.  She stepped into the loft, confident, ready to make an impression.

She tossed her wrap over a chair and made her way over to the couch.  The loft was dark, none of the overhead lights on.  From the low light of the television she could just see Nick's outline seated in front of the television.

Natalie slipped off the dress pumps.  She knew she couldn't sneak up on a vampire, but that didn't mean it wasn't worth a try.

There he was, not moving, engrossed in some hockey game.  She crept closer, closer, stifling the urge to giggle.

She reached out her hand.  The plan, to grab his chin and pull up his face for a huge kiss.  And her goal was just inches away.

        "Nat!"

So much for the surprise.  But something was wrong.  The voice came from the landing.

She looked down.  The face bathed in the glow of the TV light was none other than that of Don Schanke.

"Hey, Nat!  I didn't know you were coming.  Kinda overdressed, aren't ya, for a hockey game?"

Nat instantly became self-conscious as she noticed where Schanke was staring, and crossed her arms over her chest.  "I had a date," she explained.

"Must be some guy, to get so dolled up."

Nat lifted her hand to decline the offer.  "I thought so."

Schanke held up a beer can.  "Want a cold one?"

The light level rose in the loft.  Nat looked to see Nick coming down the stairs, remote in hand.  "Nat, what a surprise."

Schanke was still leering at the dress.  Nick didn't seem to give it as much as a second glance.

"I stopped by about that, ummm," Nat blanked.

        "That test?" offered Nick.

"Right, the test.  For your...." Nat looked to Nick, her eyes pleading with him to give her the answer.

        "...skin condition?"  Nick asked.

"Right.  Skin condition."  She pointed towards the stairs.  "Upstairs?"

From over on the couch Schanke let out a laugh.  "I wish my doc dressed like this."  He let out a snort.  "But I'm not sure Doctor Dan has the chest for that dress," he continued under his breath.

Natalie led the way into Nick's room.  He closed the door behind himself as he entered.

Once in the room she turned to face him.  "Why, Nick?"

Nick shrugged.  "He just came over.  He was babbling something about Myra and skin so pretty.  And he'd been drinking."

Natalie's eyes bore into Nick, but she softened her glance.  She wouldn't have wanted Nick to send Schanke out in that state, who knows what he might have done behind the wheel.

Nick reached out and took her hand, pulling her close.  "I can make it up to you."

While she was tried not to smile, there was something about being so near to Nick that tended to make her giddy.

He swept her into a close embrace.  Before she knew it, she was backed up against the door.  Nick's lips were upon her neck, kissing his way up to her cheek, her lips.

Natalie stiffened, then relaxed, as she felt a cold hand tracing along the top of the dress, his palm over her breast, the nipple hardening beneath.

"Does this help?" asked Nick, pulling away to allow Natalie the chance to breathe.

She licked her top lip.  "It's a start."

Nick pulled away slightly, running his hands down her side until they rested around her waist, then slid down over her buttocks.

Nat mirrored his grasp and pulled him close again.  "A good start."

Nick placed light kisses upon her eyelids.  "What say after tomorrow night's shift you come over."

        "And?"

        "And, a bubble bath?"

        "And?"

        "A massage?"

        "And?"

Nick gave her a pout.  "I must really be in trouble."

"Well, this dress wasn't exactly for Schanke.  Imagine the teasing I'm going to hear while he tries to figure out who I was out with."

A sly smile came to Nick's lips.  "Let's let the rest be a surprise."

        "Promise?"

        Nick nodded.  "Promise."

He pulled away, but Nat couldn't resist one pinch on the bum.  "I'll hold you to that."

Before he could respond she was off, out the door of the room.

Down below, he could hear Schanke talking to Natalie.  "Think he'll live?"

"If he's good," she replied.  "See you Schank."

Nick grabbed a bottle he kept up on his dresser and took a swig.  Then, a second, longer, drink.  With his composure returned, he went back down to where Schanke was sitting.

"Whoever she's seeing must really be special to merit that outfit. I hope he deserves her."

Nick took a seat on the couch.  "Me too, Schank."

Schanke became quiet for a moment.  Nick looked over and could swear his partner was staring at him.

        "What?"

Schanke shrugged.  "I don't know.  Somehow I just always thought you two would make a good couple."

Nick's thoughts echoed his agreement, but his face remained neutral.  "I suppose I just never saw her that way."

"I guess it's tough with a coworker," Schanke agreed.  "But you missed a great score while you were up there!"

'Not my first of the night,' Nick thought.  As he watched the game he ran through a list of what he could do to make it up to Natalie.  It'd have to be something special.  Something very special, indeed.
